As a city councilor, I've turned our community's demands for tenant rights, worker rights, & safer streets into law. As mayor, I'll have the power & perspective to move urgently to make our home a more affordable, accountable, & accessible city for all. secure.actblue.com/donate/ma…

His schedule was packed with getting into Twitter fights with Bernie supporters and changing the primary schedule to choke off the possibility of someone primarying a barely functioning president with an approval rating in the 30s.
Notably, Jaime Harrison leaves the DNC chairship this weekend as the only party chair in the modern era — from either party — to enter the position with their party having the House, Senate, and presidency, and leave with it having lost all three

This move accomplished a few things: –raised salience of migration in campaign –implied Trump is right on the merits about his #1 issue –muddled Dem message –made Dems look like backtracking phonies post 'kids in cages' and 'stupid wall' What it didn't do? –win over any voters
Replying to @jstein_sun
I was on an MSNBC panel last year when Republicans rejected Biden's bipartisan immigration compromise, and the liberal guests were genuinely convinced it was going to seal Trump's defeat in November. Never made any sense to me

Shakir says he wants the DNC to attract people who are driven by "program and mission" — and then they can bring their "identities to the problems we need to solve." "Let’s get into that, not separate ourselves out, give pats on the head for being in various identity groups."

As a retired Trans elected official, I agree with @fshakir that the DNC does not need to give process votes as a conciliation prize for being targets. We need a party that builds working-class solidarity and understands that an injury against one is an injury against all.
At DNC chair forum, Faiz Shakir splits from other candidates in declining to commit to: - increasing at-large DNC seats for transgender people - creating a Muslim caucus "I'm frustrated by the way in which we utilize identity to break ourselves apart," Shakir says

If you’re a blue state legislator wondering how you can protect trans people right now, allowing birth certificates to be changed without listing them as “amended” so that we can still get passports is high on the list.

We passed a bill in committee yesterday that felonizes elected officials if they vote against Trump’s immigration policy. Let that sink in. Duly elected officials will go to jail- will have a criminal record- if they do not vote for and support Trump’s policies.

Obama had eight years to pass meaningful immigration reform. For two of those years, Dems had the White House, the House, and the Senate. They didn’t get it done. Instead of owning and learning from their failure, the party pushes an ahistorical narrative that blames “activists.”
Yup! Dems had a very popular message and policy on immigration. But thanks to a small group of activists who never represented most Latinos or immigrants, this is what happened when Biden used the same exact language in 2020: politico.com/story/2019/08/1…

FETTERMAN admits that Laken Riley Act does not protect Dreamers. Asked why he broke his promise never to vote to harm Dreamers, he muttered about wearing a hoodie and gym shorts to the inauguration. "I don't see why people are so concerned with how others dress," he replied.

It’s not because they lost Nevada or by 1.5%, it’s bc the Democratic project of the last 44 years was to capture wealthy moderates and hope their base wouldn’t notice what they were giving away for that, and that utterly failed in every way. They don’t know who they serve anymore
I can't explain it but it feels like there's no fight left in democrats. Like none of them. They're all just rolling over to Republican supermajority in politics and culture.

Last year I learned that a tiny county in northwest Minnesota is responsible for 40% of the state's drug-free zone possession charges and obtains 61% of convictions under those statutes, despite being home to only 0.5% of the population. I wanted to find out why (1/x)

After decades of gridlock, it’s stunning that the first bipartisan immigration reform bill that is poised to become law has no relation to border security, fails to protect Dreamers, & instead forces ICE to detain people merely accused of crimes.

Climate change mitigation is obviously important but at some point we need to hire like 100k new federal firefighters and pay them all 6 figures. As it stands now most are leaving because they’re getting paid shit wages/forced to lobby for their retention bonus over and over

The Laken Riley act might as well be called the Lies for Lockups Act. Anybody with a cop buddy that is mad at a Hispanic person can just get them arrested on bogus robbery charges on the off-chance they’re undocumented! Or cause they assume they’re undocumented.

2017 had some cringeworthy moments but at least one-third of the Democrats in Congress didn't immediately decide that losing an election meant they had to vote for Republican messaging bills making Ken Paxton the national immigration ombudsman
