Why did the wealth tax get crushed in CA? Was it because it was badly written? Was there any version of it that could have passed?
I’m not sure a state/level approach makes sense, given domestic capital mobility. But this thing where we only tax W2 earners isn’t a great trend.

The lying on tariffs is out of control.
So here’s Roger Marshall at the Kansas State Fair getting booed by the crowd and met with shouts of liar for defending the tariffs.
Look with your own eyes and tell me tariffs weren’t a factor.
Data centers are the closest thing to a municipal money printer for funding infrastructure and schools and the slopulist political opposition is evil.
Data centers in Loudoun County, Virginia: “We get $1.2 billion a year in local tax revenue, about 40% of all of our tax revenue...on 3% of our land”
Buddy Rizer, the county's economic development chief, explained how “data center alley” grew:
“We would have never looked at having 55 million square feet of data center, 230-some buildings. That was not the plan. The plan was to utilize the fiber loop, the internet exchange, to utilize a reclaimed water line, and buildings that were already built. That was the plan, right? And so that made a lot of sense.”
“But, you know, fast forward, today we are largely dependent on that. We get $1.2 billion a year in local tax revenue, about 40% of all of our tax revenue. And while that looks overwhelming, data centers take only about 3% of all of our land in the county. So it’s quite a return on investment. You know, 40%, $1.2 billion, on 3% of our land.”

The idea DC should retrocede into Maryland is genuinely so stupid. You should be embarrassed for believing it.
The two have been distinct political entities for nearly 250 years. Neither DC *or* Maryland wants it. It would be like making Puerto Rico a state by adding it to FL.

Part of the problem with “economic populism” discourse is it simultaneously means broadly accepted ideas on the left like raising taxes on the wealthy & corporations, regulating social media companies & AI companies, and increased government intervention in the healthcare market. (All of this mainstream lib economists agree with)
And then there is this intellectual vanguard that also call their project economic populism but they are focused on eliminating the influence of economists, resurrecting tariffs, and treating tons of normal private market activity as presumptively suspect/worthy of govt intervention.

I contributed to a @nytopinion roundup of ideas for what Dems should do with their newfound power. My suggestion? Pass the MediKids legislation that @SenatorAndyKim put forward this summer!! nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

Very true. If FDR was president today he would build hyperscale datacenters on western BLM land. The Civilian Superintelligence Corps would be building transmission lines. The TVA would be a vast nuclear buildout.

Just an anecdote about the DC economy.
We're changing apartments and our 2BR current apartment is now on the market.
The rent being advertised for it now is *15 percent* lower than when we signed the lease about a year ago.

The Constitution was not designed to be biased against large urban centers, that is a post hoc justification.

Anyway, the midterms are over and a couple of friends asked me why they’re seeing certain accounts going nuclear on Ossoff overnight seemingly out of nowhere

BREAKING: #Isles Mathew Barzal no longer in a red non-contact jersey. He's in a regular jersey this morning.
Yeah, Jensen’s cooked. He’s been lobbying for loosened export controls on behalf of an actual spy
US intelligence officials told the Trump administration that a woman who had become close to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was working for a Chinese spy agency, which recruited her to collect information on him, the New York Times reported Friday bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
