How fast and how far has humanity ever gone? ☀️ Parker Solar Probe: 430,000 mph 🛰️ Voyager 1: 37,800 mph 🛰️ Voyager 2: 34,100 mph Parker is fast because the Sun's gravity pulls it in. Voyager got its speed by slingshotting past the giant planets. The fastest thing we've built is diving toward the Sun, and the farthest thing we've built is leaving it behind. Both are heliophysics. To reach the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, within a human lifetime (about 80 years), you'd have to go roughly 36 million mph, about 5% of light speed. That's about 80 times faster than Parker. At Voyager's speed the trip takes about 75,000 years. 🌌

This is TRAGIC news 🥺 Very sad to start seeing more and more of our OG satellites in both the terrestrial and space weather world enter end-of-mission phases, regardless of there being new missions that have taken over their duties 💔 nesdis.noaa.gov/news/noaa-de…

Spending the week (virtually) learning about how the space weather community is beginning to plan how we will support monitoring and forecasting the space environment in the future Mars space. ☀️

Are you really a scientist if you don’t have your old conference badges hanging in your office? 😂

I think today needs to be declared as some sort of space weather holiday.

And while there was no significant geomagnetic storm that happened on this day in 2025, the tradition of big events was kept alive for me by it being the day I got my offer to join Lynker/SWPC 🥹💜
Is the Sun trying to keep the spooky season, October 10th activity alive? October 10th, 2024 was pure spooky magic ✨

Dare I say SPOOKY 👻 🎃
It’s actually a crazy coincidence that this CME is hitting on 2026-10-10 and has almost the same field strength as the CME that hit on 2024-10-10. What are the chances?! There’s something about October 10 apparently… interesting 🤔

When do you think were some of the most visually pleasing eruptions observed by GOES SUVI? I am in charge of providing a brief later this month during the GOES-19 SUVI full maturity review, which means showing off some of the cool things it has helped capture! 💥

Another day of trying to get people to understand that the Type ll sweep speeds sent out by SWPC are not intended to be taken as the literal CME speed and that they can come with great margins of error... Observation of a Type ll and lV sweep just helps confirm that a CME did launch, sometimes as advanced noticed if forecasters are waiting for coronagraph imagery.

Also, these measurements ARE NOT made by SWPC. They are actually made by USAF/USSF, using their radio observing network. SWPC just disseminates the message publicly. Back in the day, before coronagraphs existed, these sweep observations were the only way forecasters knew if a CME launched or not. Details about the exact direction, nonexistent.

What a crazy time to be the observations lead at SWPC! I've been a lot quieter on socials recently between work and taking classes, and finally learning some much needed work/life balance. But what have I been up to in the space weather world? With SOLAR-1 in full operations, focus is now on supporting the planning for the follow-on of SOLAR-A, future GEO replacement for GOES, & the Vigil L5 mission! And plenty of other behind the scenes work to preserve critical space weather observations as well as bringing new observations into operations, which is captured quite nicely with this award I recently got 🥹💜

I could talk about recent activity, which I think everyone else has covered, so I'm gonna brag about cools things SWPC is doing instead! Following an exercise that was run with the power grid community back in August, a historic repository of geoelectric simulations for some of the top geomagnetic storms, including but not limited to the Gannon Storm, the Halloween Storm, the Bastille Day storm, and the March '89 storm that resulted in the Quebec blackout has been released publicly through SWPC's testbed site! testbed.spaceweather.gov/pro… While these are past simulations, they are based on a model that runs in real-time at SWPC (spaceweather.gov/products/ge…) to help support power grid planners and operators. Increased geomagnetic activity poses a threat to the power grid system, primarily through ground induced electric fields that can be in introduced into the system. Planners and operators look to SWPC to provide them actionable space weather information to help protect their systems and aid decision making. Having an understanding of how some of these notable events from the past have influenced the geoelectric environment and subsequently power grid systems helps the community better understand and plan for future events.

G1 (Minor) to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storms are likely on 09 Oct with the arrival of a CME that was associated with a M1.4 flare from Active Region 4549 on 06 Oct. A high chance for additional M-class flare activity from Region 4549 will persist in the coming days.

Will always brag about how we have the best team ever! 🙌🏻💛
Learn about filament eruptions and CMEs by watching this latest SWPC Video posted 30 Sep 2026. A filament eruption occurred on 28 Sep and could bring G1 conditions upon arrival Thursday evening (1 Oct EDT) due a CME flanking edge - glancing blow. @NWS

.@NWSSWPC Fun Fact: We share the David Skaggs Research Center building with other NOAA/NWS groups, including @NWSBoulder. So how do you know where within the building SWPC is? The boring way is to say what block and floors we are in or look for the SWPC symbols on the office name plates. The fun way? Look for the various sun themed wall decor that perimeters SWPC’s portion of the building. ☀️

It’s been one year since #SOLAR1 🛰️, formerly named SWFO-L1, was sent to space on a @SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from @NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida on September 24, 2025. On this SOLAR-1 launch #anniversary, explore how the observatory was built, its journey to launch and the important work it does to safeguard society one million miles from home: bit.ly/SOLAR1Launch #LetsGoSWFO
