Athlete: Coach… I think I want to quit. Coach: Okay. Then let’s talk about why. Athlete: I’m tired. All the early mornings, the pain, the pressure. Sometimes I wake up and wonder what I’m even doing this for. Coach: That’s not quitting. That’s being human. Doubt shows up when you’re close to something that matters. Athlete: But I’m not even sure I’m good enough. I look around and see people stronger, faster… happier. Coach: Comparison is a liar. It shows you everyone’s surface but hides their struggle. You don’t need to be better than them. You need to be better than yesterday. Athlete: What if I never win? What if I give everything and still fall short? Coach: Then you’ll walk away with something most never touch—truth. The kind you only find when you’ve emptied yourself for something bigger than comfort. Athlete: So… you think I should keep going? Coach: I think you already know the answer. You wouldn’t be having this conversation if you truly wanted to stop. You just want someone to remind you that it’s worth it. Athlete: It hurts, Coach. Some days, it really hurts. Coach: Good. That means you care. And nothing worth having comes without pain. Now breathe. You’ve made it through every hard day so far. Most quit before the breakthrough! Don’t be like most!

Everyone is looking for the next winning edge. Dan Lanning found one most coaches still treat like fluff: Connection. Watch Oregon warm up, and you’ll see it. Lanning is moving player to player. High five, fist bump, quick word, real eye contact. Nothing long. Nothing dramatic. Just small deposits over and over. That is social and emotional learning in real life. Not a worksheet. Not a buzzword. A culture where players feel seen before they are asked to give everything. Steve Nash understood this too. Researchers once studied NBA teams and found that the teams with more teammate touch, high fives, fist bumps, and huddles showed more cooperation and performed better later in the season. That stuff matters. Because football seasons are long. Pressure hits. Losing happens. Injuries happen. Adversity shows up. And when it does, talent is not the only thing holding a team together. Connection is. The best coaches do not just demand the standard. They model it.

It all matters!
Tim Tebow said, "We can control a few things: our attitude, our effort, our focus, and how we go about treating out teammates." You can't always control external events, but you control how you respond. It means respond, don't react. 8 things you can guarantee today:

Pete Carroll shares the 3 team rules he uses to build culture. Not 10 values. Not a 100-page manual. 3 rules. Simple, repeatable, and powerful. 1: Always protect the team - "This isn't just about behavior. It's about conscience." 2: No whining, no complaining, no excuses - "Self-talk is so valuable. The words that we say are followed by our actions." 3: Be early - "You can't be early by accident. You need a plan." These 3 rules work because they shape behavior, mindset, and identity. The best cultures set standards with clarity and consistency. People know what to expect and what's expected of them. (🎥TheLeapTV )

As an AD, here’s a reminder for parents: Competition is hard.
Winning is hard.
Losing is hard.
Being coached is hard.
Accountability is hard. Competitive sports were never meant to be comfortable. If you don’t want your child to face hard things, don’t sign them up for competitive athletics. The struggle is the lesson.
The adversity is the teacher.
The hard is the point.

Nick Saban on why adversity isn't the obstacle - it's the requirement. 🎯Most people treat adversity like a detour. Something to avoid. Something to survive until conditions improve. Saban sees it differently. "Life is difficult. This camp will be difficult. But you have to overcome adversity if you're going to have a chance to be successful in your life." Not might have to. Have to. You're going to have to earn it. Listen to his next line. "There can be no great victories in your life unless you can overcome adversity. You can't be a great competitor unless you can overcome adversity." No great victories. 📌That's not a motivational line. That's a law. And here's the part most people miss: "That's mental. It has nothing to do with physical ability." Physical ability is given. Mental toughness is built. And the only way to build it is to go through something hard - and choose not to quit. The adversity isn't in the way. The adversity is the way. You don't find out who you are when things are easy. You find out when they're hard and you keep going anyway. Great victories don't come without great resistance. That's not a coincidence - it's by design.

It all matters! Love this!
Vanderbilt Head Football Coach Clark Lea (@Coach_Lea) epitomizes the meaning of ownership. I love this clip because it's a masterclass in refusing to play the victim, escaping the echo chamber that imprisons so many people, and understanding that the internal agreement you make to chase excellence comes with immense pain and a hard truth: Nobody is coming to save you. 🔥 We are not victims in this process. The joy we experience is often equal and opposite to the pain we endure. Growth isn't found by avoiding adversity, it's found by carrying it with pride. The struggle you're facing today may be the very thing preparing you for the opportunities you're praying for tomorrow. 🧭 You don't control every circumstance, but you do control your response. This is the ground you stand on. This is where you're supposed to be. There are no mistakes. Every challenge, setback, and obstacle has the potential to drive you forward if you're willing to accept it as part of your journey rather than evidence that you've been treated unfairly. 🪞 Ownership requires honesty. Be proud of where you are, but be honest about where you've fallen short. The objective is never to wait for someone else to rescue you. The objective is always to perform better. To improve. To adapt. To grow. Excellence begins the moment you stop asking who will save you and start asking how you can become better. The moment you stop seeing your circumstances as something happening to you and start seeing them as something shaping you, adversity transforms from a burden into a blueprint. @VandyFootball is leaning into this idea for the 2026 season. #AnchorDown

Great teams don’t make excuses.
They make adjustments. No…
“Yeah, but the refs…”
“Yeah, but they’re more talented…”
“Yeah, but we were tired…” Accountability starts when the excuses stop.
