Indy today fellas. I’m gonna lube up a ball, you’re gonna get on all 4’s and spin in a circle as fast as you can - DONT TOUCH THE BAGS, and then run thru the medieval torture device

Unopposed indy drills aren't helping you and endless reps on bags, sleds and donuts won't transfer to problem solving or decision making on game day.
Why? We need direct perception of the outside world to orient ourselves and coordinate our actions in response to, specifically Tau or the rate at which time gaps or open or close. Using this invariant, unchanging variable we can accurately anticipate time to contact without need for inference or conscious processing.
🔑 Key Learning Points
- Why muscle memory and "drilling the fundamentals" don't make sense in a highly variable, information rich environment.
-The limits of the OODA loop and conscious processing in sport.
-Direct perception: how invariant information means orientation is contained within perception itself.
- What is tau, and how does it relate to action gaps
-Why perception and action MUST be trained together
-Why representative, game-like sensory information and both septh and breadth in training builds robust tacklers
-How action gaps and affordances differ for every athlete, and why “if A, then B” coaching doesn’t reflect reality
-Why direct perception isn't unique to sight and why “feel” (balance, pressure and muscular tension) takes over after the initial collision

The OODA loop is a fantastic decision making framework, but it has some inaccuracies, specifically: the brain is not a computer, skills are not like pre-planned programs, and sporting skill is not the conscious, top down phenomenon we think it is.
In this @learntotackle video, I'll explain why skill is actually an emergent, self-organized relationship between athlete, task, and environment, and what this means for you and how you coach skills like the tackle.

KEY LEARNING POINTS
- The brain isn’t a computer. We can’t process all perceptual information, run simulations, and control every degree of freedom in a tackle.
- Skills aren’t programs we select and “push play” on. Strategies overlap, scenarios are endless, and we have to cope with novel situations.
- Elite decision-making is largely autonomous, not a top-down, conscious process.
- Ecological dynamics frames skills as self-organized, emergent patterns that arise from interacting with the environment.
-Athletes are pushed toward one affordance over others by the interaction of individual, task, and environmental constraints.
-Context and individuality matter. One technique or system can’t fit every athlete, position, and situation.
- Practical approach: build breadth of movement options, nudge athletes toward better options with carefully designed scenarios, then use repetition and depth to refine timing, coordination, and adaptability. Let the environment provide the feedback.

A big difference exists between attention to detail and majoring in the minors.
Great coaches know the little things add up to the spectacular, but also realize the big things can't be subtracted from a program.
Stop flirting with fluff - find a way to get quality work done.

This is the new “quiet luxury”
You need to be chasing the opposite training equivalent to Hyrox.
You need to heading to remote mountains.
Quiet gyms no EDM.
Craft of learning the lifts well.
Training with the coach only the right people know.
Walking with the confidence of fitness not cosplaying someone.
The more participation the less you should want to be involved.
Much as AI slop exists fitness slop does too.
Be discerning, disciplined.

So Chris Sale is still performing at an elite level at 38… and he’s doing it how? Not by throwing plyo balls? Not by using water bags or belts or pvc pipes? By throwing a 5oz baseball on a consistent basis and staying in shape… what a crazy concept… who would have thought? 🙋🏻♂️

Turns out that @MLB pitcher’s aren’t throwing harder than the pitcher’s from previous eras.
It’s just being measured differently like we have all been saying.
More are definitely trying to throw hard but the human body has limitations folks.
Batting averages are down and strikeouts are up because hitters are swinging up and trying to hit the ball in the air and their bats are cutting through the zone instead of staying through the zone like they should.
It’s not rocket science folks!
Just use your eyes and you’ll see it too!
Wait til the #nerds see this!

Question for the 🏈 coaches:
If everyone on your team wore the same sized clothing, would the equipment manager be doing a good job?
If the answer is no because they all have different needs, is it okay for everyone on the team to practice the same set of tackling drills?

The "umbilical cord" of nonsense!
Sometimes attaching a cable and doing things doesn't age well. Just because you add a motor and get data with a training tool doesn't mean your idea will age well.
Just like tuna and milk with a fancy blender doesn't make a great smoothie.

Sure - if you cherry-pick weak data and misunderstand tendon biomechanics

I see many kids working out like a PRO when theres no need for it right now. Hella dribbles, hella isolation stuff like your Luka or James harden at the top of the key. Aint nobody playing like that. Work on catch & shoot. Catch & drive. Catch & pass & get it back. It TRANSLATES!

High school athletes should spend less time and energy on marginal gains/pseudo science and gadgets. Health and performance go hand in hand. Learn what can have a positive influence on both.

As you watch the Rams vs. 49ers, if you want the science on long travel, circadian rhythm and performance, I got you.
I think the travel fatigue and shifts in muscle tension are more important than the circadian rhythm: stevemagness.org/p/the-rams-…

Hot take: classic periodization gets too much credit in team sport. The athlete who shows up consistently, sleeps, eats, and trusts the process will outperform the perfectly designed program run by someone chasing the latest framework. Boring works.
