There is near unanimity among scientists that polygraphy lacks validity as a diagnostic test for deception.

We need to ban polygraph tests as requirements for public employment.
Talk about relics of a seriously retarded past that still linger. Lie detecting is a bullshit science and Law Enforcement, the field were standards of evidence should be impeccable, are still pushing and valuing totally fabricated bullshit as a job requirement. Like WTF? How can we as a society be so credulous and dumb?!?

Do Lie Detectors Actually Work?
Despite being commonly known as lie detectors, polygraphs actually measure stress, using blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, sweat, and other indicators. Because lying is stressful for many people, the idea is that a polygraph, used in conjunction with a series of specific types of questions, can help determine if the subject is being truthful or not. While this can work, polygraphs have proven to be wrong before, which is why several U.S. states have banned their results as evidence in legal proceedings.

Civilian and military courts don't consider polygraph tests accurate enough to admit as evidence, but the Pentagon is still spending $30 million to develop AI-assisted lie detectors.

Polygraph machines are junk, bullshit "science." ANYONE who cheers for them is an unread, uninformed moron. Every single one. (The loudest are the ones who know its just a frame.)
Polygraphs detect physiological stress, not lies themselves. Skilled or pathological liars can control responses and pass, as seen with past cases like Aldrich Ames. Background verification of degrees and service records also failed here, which is the larger process breakdown.

How to beat a polygraph is well-documented, despite the U.S. government's best efforts to keep it a secret.

Yes, correlation. That’s the word you were missing. 😂 Deception can produce physiological arousal. So can fear, anxiety, embarrassment, anger, trauma, or being falsely accused. The machine measures the response, not its cause. You’ve finally described a polygraph correctly.

While the CIA polygraph division got away with murder, the U.S. government invented a crime for which to jail the late polygraph critic Doug Williams: antipolygraph.org/forum/inde…

29 years ago today, on 29 September 1997, the @FBI's top scientific expert on polygraphs likened polygraph screening to astrology or tea-leaf reading in testimony before Congress.

It's important to understand that polygraph "testing" is a thoroughly discredited pseudoscience. Polygraph chart readings have zero evidentiary value and should not be relied upon to either implicate or exculpate anyone.

The Pentagon wants $30 million to build an AI lie detector — no polygraph wires, just cameras and sensors reading your body.
The problem: no scientific study has ever found a universal deception marker.
The government wants to decide if you're lying based on technology the science doesn't support.

Polygraphs track stress responses but major scientific reviews, including the 2003 National Research Council report, find limited accuracy for screening—often far from reliable. Grok can review public social media and data patterns, yet pairing the two for official clearances faces accuracy, legal, and practical limits that current tools already partially address through existing AI background systems.

Some people will be talked into saying or agreeing with almost anything under the duress of a polygraph interrogation. Polygraph operators go after "admissions" aggressively because it's a feather in their hat. The smallest things get blown way out of proportion.

The U.S. government does indeed treat the polygraph as a pass/fail test, however. Many careers have been wantonly upended because of it.
