Fun story, once when I was doing some lobbying, I wrote a sensible bill with stakeholders and legislators, and a senator introduced it to my state Senate. I worked on it for two full years, shopping it for support among community members, legislators in both houses and people who might be interested. I got their input and changed it to suit them.
The bill would end the arrest, incarceration, and deportation of *trafficking victims*- ONLY.
I lobbied mostly w/ Dems who had control said they'd support. Cops later lobbied against it, and *all my liberal supporters who had promised their support* and told me how much empathy they had for it, voted against it. It failed spectacularly.
My "faith" in the system was utterly shattered and will never return.

The South is not a "lost cause". It's underorganized, underfunded, and relentlessly suppressed & gerrymandered. And despite it all, Black Southern voters have shown up anyway to be the conscience of this country throughout our history. I hope people realize that.
