It's official. Wonderful news.
Breaking news! Today Bill 102 was granted Royal Assent. This means that Keira’s Law is now law in #Ontario mandating training on gender-based #IPV and coercive control for provincial court judges and justices of the peace. @forlittlekeira @MillcroftAD

Dear incoming interns:
Remember that your attendings have been practicing medicine for years, while you're essentially getting a new job every 4 weeks.
Know that your job is not to know everything. You job is to show up, ask questions, & care deeply for your patients.

Happy Pride Month from your favorite gay surgeon! Visibility is important. I can’t tell you the number of wonderful conversations I’ve had with my patients because I proudly wear my 🏳️🌈 pin to work daily. And I will fight to keep creating these safe spaces. Happy Pride!

Today's World Family Doctor Day. These MDs are the *foundation* of healthcare. Beyond recognition, they need resources, remuneration, respect, & the influence on our system that befits their training & expertise. Much ❤️ to my FP friends & the FPs who care for my fam! #WFDD2023

Was assaulted today at
Drive Test #Kitchener by a woman who kept spewing racist hate against "f$@king brown people" when asked to wait in line. When I told her this was not OK, she came up to my face to threaten me. That's when people (and I) started recording her. A thread...

With #patient & #caregiver stories HCPs can see with other eyes, think with other minds, feel with other hearts, as well as their own. Stories aren’t data but they strengthen data and provide meaning that can lead to new & better understanding of what brings your patient to you.

Must-read if you attend (or plan!) medical conferences. I was pregnant in 2015 & 2018. Never had to choose between career & health. We shouldn't ask colleagues to travel to a jurisdiction where they can't access life saving care if needed. Conference location is an equity issue.
Attn @PresidentATS @CHESTPrez, @SCCMPresident - societies that hold conferences in states unsafe for women, LGBTQ, minorities, will lose them.
This👇🏼is already happening!

No career, no amount of money, no position in society makes one immune to IPV. These things only make it easier to hide it, and may even make it harder to escape.

Inflation and rising living costs have left 13% of Toronto residents living below the poverty line — many of whom are our most vulnerable neighbours and community members.

Thank you @Effie_ONB & @ONgov for taking action.
Last week, the Senate passed #KeirasLaw mandating training for federal judges on IPV and coercive control.
Ontario must also do its part, with judges and other legal professionals in family courts.
We must work to better protect women and girls escaping abusive relationships.

I say that a mistake we are making in education is that we are pretending that young people are essentially all the same, and that their needs can be met with a standardised package of education. We treat them as blank slates, as buckets to be filled. 2/
