Some fascinating and surprising insights into (not-only-)seal-eating killer whales in Norway 🦭🐟 by the talented @efvogel

For the Norwegian speakers: our research on humpback whale song evolution in Norway made it to the local news @NRKno

📢Our paper is out in @FrontMarineSci
In this study, we report the rapid progression in #humpback whale song structure and complexity found on a subarctic feeding ground and migratory stopover in Northern Norway using #PAM.

ALT Figure 3 Spectrographic representation of all observed themes and phrase types from the recording period January 2018 - January 2019. The spectrograms were produced using fast Fourier transform (FFT) size 8092 Hann-window with frequency resolutions of 5.69 Hz (for 2018 files) and 11.4 Hz (for 2019 files), and a 70% overlap. Corresponding audio files are provided in Supplementary Audios 1-11. Note that themes are not ordered according to how they occurred in songs but rather follow the evolutionary changes.

Birds give up the complexity of song for volume in noisy places - so they sing louder but less interesting (to both humans & mates) songs in cities. When traffic noise in San Francisco fell due to COVID, birds began to sing more complex, quieter songs like they did 50 years ago!
Congrats to @KillerWhaleKate on her master’s #thesis defence today 👏🏼
Excited to read more about #cetacean presence using #pam and automatic detection soon 📄

Bullying in academia is toxic and needs to be called out.
I use twitter to talk science, fossils, and scream about bones.
So why am I terrified to share this? This too is an unfortunate part of science...
Two years ago @Koskinonodon and I reported our advisor, Robert Reisz, for bullying and harassment.

Responding to the associate editor after they suddenly rejected our already accepted manuscript @KarinHartman14
Received an unpleasant email this morning, announcing that our manuscript got rejected AFTER being accepted just a month ago (pend.min.revi.). After 2 rounds of major revisions (!), the associate editor "can see now" that there are some shortcomings? Excuse me?

Not the kind of observations we would like to make out at sea. Why are some #whalewatching companies so ignorant, acting in such irresponsible manner? I am gutted. Regulations are needed in #Norway, specifically in the #Skjervøy region!
Got invited as a "whale expert" to train whale watching guides here in Tromsø and I am not sure I was taking any breaths during my 4h talk about the arctic ecosystem and whales.
Excited to be a part of improving how whale watching is conducted up here 🐋⛴️
Working as a northern lights guide is not the worst in-between-job there is but I am still missing the whales

‼️TW : GRAPHIC IMAGE OF AN ANIMAL‼️
Was sent this by a colleague in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. @hyperpanda what exactly are you thinking selling #sharkmeat on a mass-market scale? Pelagic shark populations have declined by >71%, and you are directly contributing to this. Do better.
