ORCAS AND A BABY PILOT WHALE – AGAIN! 😱
We are trying to piece together what is happening but we sure have a lot of questions. 🤯 It shows how much we still have to learn about interactions between these two socially complex species.

ALT Figure 3 Spectrographic representation of all observed themes and phrase types from the recording period January 2018 - January 2019. The spectrograms were produced using fast Fourier transform (FFT) size 8092 Hann-window with frequency resolutions of 5.69 Hz (for 2018 files) and 11.4 Hz (for 2019 files), and a 70% overlap. Corresponding audio files are provided in Supplementary Audios 1-11. Note that themes are not ordered according to how they occurred in songs but rather follow the evolutionary changes.

We have retrieved our hydrophone that has been recording for the past year in Finnafjörður, Iceland. We aim to use the recordings to inform the construction and use of a shipping port being built in the area. Huge thanks to @Barbaboat! Photos by @junibjorneset / @Barbaboat

In 2 weeks, you have raised £4,005 - this is incredible. This means we can purchase a Mavic 3 drone and extra batteries. The amount will also be doubled thanks to a generous donor. These additional funds will contribute to the running costs of the project. Thank you everyone.

Meet our newest member, Phil! His mother, Amelie, runs multiple acoustics projects. Marine science has become more inclusive for women in recent times, but we still have a long way to go. Within Whale Wise we are determined for our team to continue their research with a family.
Can’t complain about late evening shifts when they look like this @icelandic_orcas ☀️ midnight sun certainly has some perks! – at Iceland

BREAKING: ORCAS AND A BABY PILOT WHALE 😱😱😱😱
Yesterday our team found a group of playful #orcas and to our absolute astonishment amongst the orcas was a newborn pilot whale. There were no observations of pilot whales in the area the whole day. Where did this baby come from? 😱

Albatrosses & large petrels are particularly at risk of #bycatch. They’re attracted to prey near the ocean surface including fish used as bait in longline fisheries, or discarded fish.

Amazing results from our satellite telemetry project with Southern right whales in Argentina. Electra, a whale seen with a calf at the time of tagging, is back home after 6 months. It’s the first time we record a mom’s full migratory cycle. And her track looks like a whale 😊!
