Fireworks in NYC! We should celebrate how far we've come as a nation, but we have a long way to go to make the self evident truths of the Declaration of Independence a reality, especially for all the Americans who were left out of that document.

The NYC/Macy's fireworks display three miles from my apartment window is still an impressive show.

Elegant conservation of momentum!

And a conservation of momentum fail. (Can't wish away air resistance in this one.)

My "Learn to Fly" students will have fun with this during our January intensive course. Principles of meteorology as well as flight.

Some of the Veil Nebula with a stock Nikon D3400 on a WO ZenithStar 81 for about an hour of light gathering. I hope to have students with me on my next #Astrophotography outing in the NY Catskills.

The view across the Hudson from Pier i at 70th street in Manhattan. $5 dollar fries, too!

Cygnus region experiment: I used a D5200, 145 x 15 sec subs, on a polar-aligned Syrp pan unit. The color boost and and noise reduction is great, but the wide angle distortion (14mm Rokinon) gobbled up the corner stars when stacking. #Astrophotography

This stack of the Milky Way turned out pretty well.
3
Lagoon and Trifid nebulae from last week. Considering how close they were to the horizon, they came out pretty well.

Moon and moonset last week. It always takes me so long to get things out of the camera.

This personal story from Dr. Jocelyn Bell Burnell reinforces why she is featured in the Women in Physics lesson from STEP UP! She Changed Astronomy Forever. He Won the Nobel Prize for It. @STEPUPphysics @AMTAteachers @nytimes nytimes.com/2021/07/27/opini…

A wonderful thread! I got to meet Dr. Rubin at an @AAPTHQ summer meeting where she shared remembrances of Hans Bethe. After all the years she struggled for recognition, it was wonderful to hear her able to pursue whatever research questions interested her.
Astronomer Vera Rubin was born #OTD in 1928. Her work on galactic rotation curves became one of the main pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter, and she deserved a Nobel Prize for it. #BirthdayVeraRubin Image: Vassar College / Emilio Segrè Visual Archives
