The unions likely oppose driverless vehicles because you cannot unionize machines. (Not yet, anyway. Perhaps we shouldn’t be giving them ideas.) They may also be trying to protect traditional cab drivers and city bus drivers, who are often unionized, from competition

The labor market isn’t breaking, but it’s not as strong as we thought. July jobs fell by 23,000. Previous months were revised down by 103,000 jobs. The Fed’s next move won’t be easy.

1/2 @RichardMorrison is a senior fellow at @ceidotorg, host of the @freethe_economy podcast, and a @FreeConTalk signatory.
In a recent piece for @NRO, Morrison warned that the Securities and Exchange Commission’s Consolidated Audit Trail, which he described an “Orwellian database of every stock and option transaction,” poses a significant threat to civil liberties protected by the First Amendment.
“Investment choices may not be as obviously expressive conduct as writing a newspaper op-ed or protesting in front of a government building,” Morris wrote, but an SEC commissioner has admitted that “economic transactions offer a window into a person’s deepest thoughts and core values” and “are a rich form of value expression.”
Moreover, “maintaining a giant database full of information on millions of presumptively innocent Americans” impinges on key Fourth and Fifth Amendment protections and “presents significant cybersecurity problems.”
The SEC staff has “now received hundreds of comment letters” to inform a “comprehensive review” of the Consolidated Audit trail,” Morrison explained. “When the staff is done with its analysis, they should do the right thing: Shut down CAT entirely.” #FreeCon

If anything, Congress needs to do a detailed reexamination of all the laws it has delegated to independent commissions. That would be a great start to cutting red tape and getting bureaucrats out of people’s lives.

Congress can’t just write a law that says independent commissioners should do something any more and hope that insulates them from the consequences of their actions. That ship has not so much sailed as sunk. 2/3

In Trump v Slaughter, the Court today underscored what the Founders said 250 years ago – that the President must be responsible for all executive actions. What this decision also does is throw the responsibility for oversight of the President’s actions back to Congress. 1/3
