Thank you to @City_of_Anaheim Council Member Kristen Maahs for traveling to Sacramento on Tuesday to testify in support of Cal Cities-sponsored SB 490 by @SenatorUmberg! The bill requires timely investigations of sober living homes accused of providing treatment services in violation of state licensure laws.
We appreciate the Assembly Health Committee for advancing SB 490 and helping strengthen accountability. 👏

FALSE! Murdoch’s New York Comic Book is laundering a fake stat from a foreign tabloid to attack a program that is publicly tracked and clearly working.
CARE Court has helped THOUSANDS of Californians into care to recover — not 22.
Even under the most NARROW definition (court-ordered treatment plans, which is one of many treatment outcomes), the number is 600+ and growing.
This is not journalism. It’s Trump-aligned propaganda.

🤝 Cal Cities teamed up with @SenatorUmberg and the @calnarcs to introduce SB 758, which would ban tobacco license holders from selling nitrous oxide. Recreational use of nitrous oxide is dangerous and increasing in California cities. The bill passed out of the Senate Public Safety committee yesterday!
Thank you to Ukiah Council Member Mari Rodin for coming to Sacramento to testify in support of the bill. @CityofUkiah passed a local ordinance in 2022 in response to growing concerns about the spread of whippet sales at local smoke shops.

California stands in solidarity with the people of Iran, who are confronting violent repression, mass internet and power shutdowns, and economic collapse imposed by a theocratic authoritarian regime.
The scale and persistence of protests across Iran demand fundamental change after decades of state violence and denial of basic rights.
In support of California’s Iranian community and in defense of universal human rights, we urge an immediate end to violence against civilians, the restoration of internet access, and respect for the Iranian people’s right to chart their own future.

NEW: @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom just signed a pair of bills into law protecting elections.
The first focuses on keeping dirty money out of California’s democracy — and puts on the 2026 ballot a repeal of the ban on publicly financed elections.
The second makes it a crime to hold “sweepstakes” (funded by billionaires) to buy elections.
Senator Tom Umberg retweeted
Attempts by billionaires and outside actors to sway elections through unethical means undermine our democracy and civic participation.
California will not sit idle as our democracy is attacked.

Today, I’m signing legislation to safeguard our elections and the voice of every voter.
It's now illegal to use contests or payments to get people to register to vote.
And in the 2026 election, voters have the chance to repeal our state's ban on the public financing of elections.
