i'd vaguely heard about the US election in 2000 actually being "stolen" and i looked it up and it seems consensus is
- the entire US election came down to florida
- the difference in votes was <0.1%, not statistically significant
- polling machine had hardware issues way higher than <0.1%
- florida could have decided to actually and properly hand count the votes
- the state's highest supreme court decided to do that
- bush asked the supreme court to intervene in a state's free & independent ability to run its own elections
- the voting was exactly on partisan lines: the 5 republican judges declared bush the winner
- they cited reasoning that competes for one of the most transparently dishonest rulings of all time
- the single most comprehensive study after the fact found that if the votes had been properly counted, gore would have won
- this is not factoring in a calculated, well-documented attempt by republican governor of florida to suppress thousands of votes, in black counties for al gore, by the official US election commission

Just read the insights of Jeff Bezos in his opinion piece in The Post. I wasn't going to join 200,000 others and cancel my subscription because doing so won't hurt Bezos -- he paid more for his yachts than his newspaper -- and, yes, the Post newsroom where good people, and some friends still labor continues providing meaningful journalism. But, my god, this man's insipid defense of his own transparent cowardice is provoking.
I cancelled. I wasn't going to do it. I probably shouldn't, and certainly, if this technobrat oligarch ever releases his grip on what needs to be an independent newsroom and editorial board, indifferent to the financial positions of its publisher, then I'll return. But this kind of abuse of a public trust by a publisher is unacceptable.

Focusing for a moment on the POLICIES at play.
Voters were asked whether they supported 100 different policies, but weren't told whether the policy was from Trump or Harris.
Nearly all of Harris' policies got majority support from the public, and... 🧵

It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor @CarolineFohlin came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, "What are you doing?" That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.

Israel is not eradicating Hamas. They’re not bombing in some legal, humanitarian way. Every single idiot not supporting a ceasefire is by default saying I support more of this, because this is what Israel is actually doing in reality. Never ever let them forget that.

People say it’s foreign trolls or tiktok that sows cynicism and maybe a bit, but I think watching 4 wks of kids being pulled out of rubble then reading your govt magically found $14B extra to do more of that and also your schools and roads are falling apart may contribute as well

I met Senator Diane Feinstein once, in the lead up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. She had just recently been assigned to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (in 2001), and it was in that capacity that she had a senior staffer from the committee ask me to come to Washington DC to brief her on Iraqi WMD and the allegations being made by the Bush administration that Iraq continued to possess them. We met in a secure conference room in the Capital building—me, the Senator, and a half dozen staffers and aides. It was a polite, professional affair, with the Senator asking questions and taking notes. Eventually she confronted me—“Your position is causing us some difficulty. You are making the US look bad in the eyes of the world.” I replied that my analysis and the underlying facts were rock solid, something she agreed with. I said that while I knew she couldn’t reveal sensitive intelligence, if she could look me in the eye and say she has seen unequivocal proof that Iraq retained WMD, I’d shut up and go away. She looked at her retinue, and then me. “I have seen no such intelligence,” she replied. She thanked me for the briefing, and said it provided her with “food for thought.”
On October 11, 2002, Senator Feinstein voted in favor of the resolution authorizing war with Iraq. Later, she said she had been misled by the Bush administration and bad intelligence.
I will forever know Senator Feinstein as someone who had been empowered by the truth, and lacked the moral courage to act on it. The blood of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis stains her soul. I hope when she stands in judgment before her maker, she is punished accordingly.

If there’s one thing I wish everybody knew about US healthcare, it would be the existence of pharmacy benefit managers. They are just as responsible for soaring drug prices as pharma, yet most people are oblivious to their actions. Truly incredible middlemanning effort by PBMs.
