Pretty proud of this one, Super Team; it's all coming together:
Every October the tour comes in from the weather. The Asian swing is over, Shanghai has its champion, and almost everything left between here and the end of the season will be played under a roof, with tired legs, ranking points and the last few spots at the Finals all on the line.
And every year it opens with the same lazy take from people whoโd rather borrow an opinion than form one. Close the roof, trust the serve, take the over.
It isnโt even wrong, exactly. A roof takes away the wind, the sun, and the heat, all the things that let a returner steal a few cheap points. On the BLENDER scale, where last seasonโs slowest court is a 1 and its fastest is a 100, indoor courts averaged a 74, fourteen points quicker than outdoor hard. The reputation is fairly earned.
But a roof only removes the weather. It doesnโt remove the altitude, the floor, or the way a playerโs style holds up under it, and thatโs where the attention has to go this time of year.
Three distinct tournaments, let's ride.
๐ Almaty is one of the strangest rooms on tour. On paper it projects to a 72, a point off the Shanghai court we just left, but it gets there in a way no other indoor event does.
The floor itself rated a sluggish BLENDER 41 last fall, and it was 810 meters of thin air that added the other 24. The air carries the ball and the floor still grabs it, so the court gives something to almost everyone: enough pace to reward a serve, and enough grip for a patient player to work his way into points.
You can see it in the results. Only about a quarter of sets across Almatyโs two editions have reached a tiebreak, against nearly four in ten in Brussels, and both champions have been Baseline players. Medvedev, a Metronome, won it last year and arrives as the top seed off a semifinal run in Shanghai, though under a roof the market has him figured: 17-12 indoors since 2023, almost exactly the 17.5 wins his prices called for.
A room this open leaves more than one way to win it, and the two players Iโd look to come at it from opposite ends.
Bublik is a Shotmaker with a Servebot secondary, which gives him two different ways to beat you. His serve ends a big share of his points before a rally ever starts, and when one does, heโd rather reach for a drop shot, an odd angle or a ball you didnโt see coming than trade from the baseline. Thin air rewards both, and since 2023 heโs 21-12 indoors when closing prices projected about 17 wins.
Khachanov is built the other way. Heโs an Architect with a Metronome secondary, and his game is all about building pressure. He keeps his rally tolerance means every exchange becomes one more ball you have to handle, and each shot pushes you a little further back until you find yourself in defense. Even though he can, he doesnโt need to end the point early when he can make you feel it getting away. That takes a floor that grabs the ball and gives him time to build, and the 2024 champion here is 23-11 indoors against roughly 19.
One plays the air and the other plays the floor, and in Almaty either one can be a weapon.
๐ Brussels is where the reputation holds up. It projects to a 94, right where it sat last year as one of the fastest courts on tour, when nearly four sets in ten went to a tiebreak.
The lazy take walks in looking to back the Servebot, and on a floor like this itโs easy to see why. But a big serve only wins the points that start on your own racket. Once the ball comes back, a Servebot is an ordinary player, and an ordinary player on a quick court is a coin flip waiting for a tiebreak.
Lehecka shows it. He made the final here last year and his game looks built for this room, yet indoors since 2023 heโs 11-12 when his prices expected almost 14 wins.
Defending well isnโt the answer either. Walls, the players who live on running everything down, have been a losing proposition under a roof, 38-64 indoors since 2023 and 2-14 against the Time Thieves who take the ball early and leave them no time to recover.
The attacker who interests me most is Blockx, the home No. 4 seed, and heโs spent this season turning into a real problem. He made the semifinals in Madrid this spring, beating Auger-Aliassime and Ruud along the way, reached a final in July, and went all the way to the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Heโs labeled a Servebot, but thereโs more rally in his game than the label suggests, with Metronome as his secondary, and his serve has only grown more dangerous as the year has gone on. Over the last six months, half the points he wins have come off quick service points, up from 41%. Now he gets the fastest floor heโll see all year, in front of his own crowd.
This is where Iโll be backing the attackers. The work is finding the ones who can still win the point after the serve comes back.
๐ Lyon has no history at all, only a projection built from rooms that resemble it. The nearest match from last season is Marseille, where Humbert beat Medjedovic in the final, and both men are back.
Humbert makes the best case this week that indoor tennis is its own game. Heโs 28-9 under a roof since 2023, more than seven wins clear of what his prices implied, and 19-4 when heโs been the favorite. No one in these three draws has beaten the indoor market by more.
What makes him so interesting is how much of that comes from the room. By our numbers, only Shapovalov raises his level more indoors compared with how he plays everywhere else. On paper itโs the same hard court Humbert plays all summer. In practice itโs a different surface, which is exactly why the BLENDER scale rates indoor hard on its own.
Nakashima is the other side of that coin. Heโs having the best year of his career, opening with a final in Brisbane and then reaching back-to-back Masters finals in Canada and Cincinnati this summer, beating Jodar, Medvedev and Fritz across those two runs.
His profile might still surprise you. For all that winning, our system canโt find a style to give him. Heโs a JAG, Just Another Gunner, and thatโs less a knock than a description: he does a lot of things well and leans toward the First Strike side, but no single part of his game sits far enough from the tour to define him.
Indoors, that has cost him. Heโs 4-10 under a roof since 2023 when his prices expected about eight wins, and 3-7 as the favorite. Quick indoor courts reward a player with one weapon to lean on, and a game built on doing everything well gets fewer long points to prove it, while the market keeps pricing him off a breakout year built in the sunshine.
Close the roof and give the servers their boost. Just donโt stop where the lazy take does, because everything the roof didnโt touch is where the edge lives this time of year.
Best of luck, Super Team.

The O/U on โballkids yelled atโ is 2.5:
๐ 3U ๐ช๐ธ Rafael Jodar ML (+170/2.70)
Insiders are saying the Over is a lock.
๐ Here's Why ๐
Short memories out there. Rafa Jodar is the Chosen One, and he's one of the hardest-hitting Time Thieves on tour.
That matters against Medvedev, because the Octopusโthe Tourโs premiere Metronomeโwins by being patient. He stands miles behind the baseline, sends everything back, and waits for you to get bored and miss.
Jodar doesn't get bored, and he has the forehand to make sure of it. He averages 80 mph off that wing to Medvedev's 75, and in the five-to-eight shot rallies where Daniil usually takes over, Jodar wins 55.5% of the points to Medvedev's 50.9%. Medvedev needs the rally to settle into his rhythm, and Jodar keeps hitting through it before it can.
The court only makes his job easier. Shanghai is playing quick at a BLENDER 73, and quick courts tilt every match a little toward the server: across the tour, break rates dip from 19% to 17%.
For these two, the tilt is a lot steeper. Jodar's hold rate jumps from 81% to 87% on courts like this, nearly three times the normal boost, and he's holding 90% this week.
Medvedev's return, among he best in the world and the shot that usually sets him apart, takes nearly three times the normal hit. The ball gets to him faster, he has less time to set up from back there, and his break rate falls from 28% to 22%. Still well-above average, but a lot more human.
Fast court, big forehand, a returner who suddenly looks ordinary. Everyone else can forget about the Chosen One.
I won't.
Best of luck, Super Team.

Styles make matches:
๐ 2U ๐ช๐ธ Rafael Jodar ML (-113/1.88)
I hope he yells at 3 ball kids.
๐ Here's Why ๐
Ruud builds. Jodar shows up with a wrecking ball.
That's the whole match.
One guy needs the rally to get long and heavy so his forehand can start doing architecture. The other guy's entire personality is making sure that never happens. He takes the ball early, hits it flat, and the point is over before Ruud has finished laying the foundation.
The market has been wrong about this exact collision for seven years.
Ruud has played 33 priced matches against Time Thieves since 2019. The closing lines expected him to win about 16. He won 14.
When he's the dog in those matches he's 4-13, which is not a slump, it's a rรฉsumรฉ.
It gets worse. Jodar also grades out as a Return Raider, the kind of guy who looks at your second serve the way a golden retriever looks at a tennis ball. He stands on the baseline like he's paying rent there, takes the return on the rise, and that flat, blistering contact makes him one of the best in the world at it. This week his first-serve return is coming back ten miles an hour faster than Ruud's.
Ruud against Return Raiders? 31-29 when the book expected 34 wins. Ten points under his own baseline. Against everyone else he's roughly fair-priced. Against these guys the price just doesn't hold.
Let's be clear about who we're fading here. Ruud is really good. Three-time Slam finalist, one of the heaviest forehands on tour, barely donates an error, and once the rally reaches shot six he's winning it against almost anyone. None of that is in question. What's in question is whether he gets to shot six. His game is a beautiful machine that needs a few seconds to warm up. Jodar's whole job is to unplug it at the wall.
What does that tell us? The market sees a top-25 player with a top-10 forehand and prices the rรฉsumรฉ. We see a fish out of water, a builder with no time to build, and a kid whose game is potentially at its most dangerous in these conditions. The book is pricing the player. We're pricing the matchup.
That gap is the edge, and it's the kind of edge that doesn't show up in your standard box score.
Now add the court speed. Shanghai is playing a 73 on our speed scale this week, eight points faster than its last three editions, and it's serve-driven: holds are running three points above the norm. On a court like this most points are over before the rally becomes a rally. For a first-strike player that's the first strike for free. For a builder it's a clock that's always running.
So what's the market doing? Moving toward Ruud. Near pick'em. The same mispricing that's cost him two wins against the close in this matchup is being handed to us at a better number than it was this morning.
The style that beats him, the court that speeds it up, and a line moving against the data.
It's time to strike.
Best of luck, Super Team.

โ๏ธ ANALYSIS: What kind of tennis player is Arthur Gea? โ๏ธ
Blender says โJust Another Guy,โ a JAG, and after a Masters quarterfinal on his first try that needs explaining, because the label is more interesting than it sounds.
Quick primer. Every tracked player gets one of seven archetypes, and the archetype answers one question: how does he win points?
Not how well.
Nobody votes on it. With thanks to @TennisViz, every point heโs played over the last two years gets scored against the tour, each archetype is a bundle of those scores, and a player has to clear a bar before he qualifies for one (e.g., a Servebot canโt just win a lot of quick service points, he also canโt be a better player in rallies than he is overall).
The descriptions are just the narrative version of the math:
๐ค Does the serve end the point before a rally starts? Servebot. Shelton.
๐ซ Does he just hit through you? Gunslinger. Fils.
๐ช Does he have more answers than you have questions? Shotmaker. Alcaraz.
๐ท Does he build the point and never hand you a free one? Architect. Musetti.
๐ Does the same ball, again and again, make you crack first? Metronome. Medvedev.
๐งฑ Does he make you win the point twice? Wall. de Minaur.
โณ Does he take your time away without paying for it in errors? Time Thief. Sinner.
The seven sort themselves into two families. The First Strike Family is Servebot, Gunslinger, Shotmaker and Time Thief: decide it early, on my terms. The Baseline Family is Architect, Metronome and Wall: make it long, and make you solve me. The two barely overlap.
Gea is as clean a Baseline Family player as the data has. Positive on all three Baseline archetypes, negative on all four First Strike ones. Better the longer the rally runs. Barely misses. Steals 36% of the points heโs defending. No ambiguity about which house he lives in.
The problem is the room itself. He leans Wall, then Metronome, then Architect, and none is far enough ahead to name him. JAG means the model can see the family and canโt pick the member yet.
Part of that is the build. Gea hits a flat backhand, about 1,480 rpm against a tour average near 1,800, and a forehand with almost 3,000 rpm on it. Flat on one side, heavy on the other. Thatโs Cam Norrieโs build too, but Norrie turned it into a style, lefty angles and point construction that drag you where he wants you.
Gea, so far, seems content to not miss and to hit the short ball when you give him one. He converts 72% of his attacks, well above the tour, and thatโs about as much ambition as the profile shows.
Heโs 21, and the year says the profile is nowhere near finished. He started it ranked 241st. He was 127th in August when he won Los Cabos, made the second week of the US Open as a lucky loser, and heโll be inside the top 50 on Monday after Shanghai. Three months, 185 spots. Where the game goes from here is the fascinating part, because the pieces he has could become three different players.
Since July his defence is already a different animal: points won once a rally hits nine shots went from 52% to 60%, and his hold rate at tour level from 62% to 81%. Heโs 12-2 in that stretch.
Then he went to Shanghai and the First Strike kit is showing up. Through Faria, Humbert and Shelton he held 87%, won 60% behind his second serve, and saved 10 of 15 break points. Then he out-aced Mensik 11 to 6. Thatโs a First Strike week from a Baseline Family player, and the first week the serve carried him as much as--if not more than--the legs.
The court helped, and not the way youโd think. Shanghai is a 73 on the BLENDER scale, a First Strike court where seven points in ten are over inside four shots. That should punish a player whose return does no damage. It doesnโt, because on a court that fast nobody builds much off a return anyway, and everything ends up in tiebreaks, where the guy who misses least is looking to be the favorite no matter whose serve is bigger.
Which also tells you what flusters him. His losses this year that werenโt tiebreak coin flips came on slow courts against heavy-ball Baseline Family players. Slow the court down, get the ball up above that flat backhand, and refuse to give him the free errors he feeds on, and the formula stalls. Thatโs where Iโd fade him. A big server on a fast court, it turns out, is the matchup heโs fine with.
The systemโs nearest comp is Flavio Cobolli, and thatโs a useful one, because Cobolli has been a JAG in this data through a breakout year of his own. Same family, similar scores, same habit of winning without one loud mechanism.
The label didnโt stop him and it wonโt stop Gea. Cobolliโs version hurts you on the return, though, and Geaโs doesnโt yet, which is the first thing Iโd want to see him add. Iโd bet Wall for Gea once this week is digested. But the Wall version of him doesnโt hold 87% on a quick court, and this one did.
So, what kind of tennis player is Arthur Gea? A Baseline Family player with a Norrie build and none of Norrieโs tricks yet, legs that got better in July and a serve that showed up in October.
The BLENDER calls that a JAG because it reads two years of points and heโs only been this guy for three months. JAG isnโt the verdict. Itโs the model saying wait.
What do YOU see in him? How would YOU refine?
