Big thanks to my friends at @Sharpcast_ for having me on the podcast :) Had a great conversation, especially timely given Brazil’s recent ban on online sports betting.

Here's something the great Stanford Wong once said to me: "If you're smart enough to make money gambling, you're probably smart enough to make money in anything you do."

Charlie Munger: "I won't play in a game where the other people are wise and I'm stupid. I look for a place where I'm wise and they're stupid. And, believe me, it works better." "God bless our stupid competitors. They make us rich."

Was listening to @CirclesOffHQ’s Circle Back on laying massive favorites and had a few thoughts: 1. Sportsbooks love taking longshots. That 8-leg SGP paying 200/1 or a 300/1 golf outrights? They're laying the "no." Exchanges let sharp bettors be the house and get real prices laying those longshots.

60% is high fwiw. And we have to stop speaking in absolutes. Straights can be bad and parlays can be bad or they can both be good. It is all dependent on price, your fair, and the subsequent edge you do or don’t have. Will most people lose betting parlays - sure. But for the right people they can be a great tool for edge stacking and circumventing limits and a good way to increase your bankroll (variance). For the wrong person parlays are bad and compound your edge in a negative direction. But if people just enjoy betting parlays it is okay to have fun. Having fun in sportsbetting is fine and helps all of the sharp guys long term. This fascination and elitist attitude that we all have to tweet about how disgusting, despicable, and awful parlays are is funny to me. Much like anything they can have some good and plenty of bad. Peel back the layers and think a bit more critically people.

Your opponent is the consensus. Through the aggregate wisdom of the crowd, the consensus is difficult to beat. But - the consensus has a weakness. Baked into every consensus is sentiment. Sentiment is capable of being irrational. This makes the consensus prone to mistakes. Not big mistakes. Small ones. Here and there, with some degree of repeatability. That’s where you look, to find the little mistakes. You don’t have to know the “correct” answer, and you certainly don’t have to predict the future. The value you’re after is relative not absolute. It’s a fun game once you understand what game you’re actually playing.
