A new type of fraud in scientific publishing was detected when the number of article downloads didn’t match the number of citations. What was viewed as an odd finding is now the basis of a recent publication about how authors have manipulated their citation metrics.
𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀?
A simple reason is that citation metrics indicate how much a research article is being cited by other researchers. Thus, a higher citation would imply a greater utility. Authors later use the citation metric as a measure of their output, and in some cases, it can enhance the competitiveness of their CVs and grant applications or even be a reason for promotion.
It’s alarming to see a metric that should reflect merit and utility being manipulated. The publication highlights that some citation indexes have been inflated a staggering 1000 times, underscoring the urgent need to address this issue. Worse, scientists who should have been referenced were replaced.
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁?
The deceptive act of replacing the DOI to reference their work and removing that of others into the metadata is a wake-up call. It's clear that publication databases need to be fortified against such manipulation, emphasizing the importance of future-proofing these systems.
According to the researchers, the loophole occurs between the publisher's communication and infrastructures that are known to link research objects, entities, etc., one of them being Crossref.
Verbatim: ‘Effectively, because Crossref is not checking the accuracy of the metadata provided by publishers, this creates a “breach” within the information flow.’ (Besançon et al., 2024).
@NobleBlocks, we are monitoring such attempts, especially those that risk scientific integrity and create unfair advantages for those seeking undeserving shortcuts.
The Open-Access (free-to-read) article (linked below) details how the discovery was verified. A huge shout out to the researchers Lonni Besançon (@lonnibesancon), Guillaume Cabanac (@gcabanac), Cyril Labbé, and Alexander Magazinov, who analyzed the loophole in depth.

Many top scientists are allergic to hype. But why?
Hype and oversimplification, often seen in clickbait, make scientists avoid it to protect their hard-earned reputations.
While this caution means chilled enthusiasm about new projects and innovations, it also means scientists don’t play into unrealistic expectations investors sometimes have, especially in volatile markets.
When scientists are certain, though, it's a sign to pay attention. 🔍💡📈
@ShellBoudreau dives into why DeSci has (fortunately) less hype and more solutions on the 'Bonded by Science' podcast with @Dr_JohnFletcher, PhD, CEO of The Innovation Game (TIG).

Academic Publishing has a 20+ billion profile - with almost free labor! You would think that the market is being squeezed by AI, Energy and E-commerce, but that is simply not the case.
Academic publishing is big business, and those who facilitate and serve it may be enlightened to know that the current estimates of the freely given peer-review process divert an estimated 6 Billion USD per year away from the scientific community. (And that is a lot of research funds lost).
Imagine the possibilities if some of those funds could be captured and redirected back into the scientific community? @ShellBoudreau puts these numbers into perspective and calls out to scientists to look at them too.

A big question raised at @DeSciBerlin by Benji Leibowitz from @Molecule_dao is how to align the incentives of two distinct worlds: research and crypto. Noble incentives exist in both realms, such as intellectual freedom and the desire to pursue knowledge versus achieving financial freedom and gaining respect. However, to be blunt, both sides know that several traditional incentives are also self-serving and, yes, monetary. Still, win-win scenarios are upon us.
What is abundantly clear at this conference is that change is not just a possibility but a reality unfolding before our eyes. If you dare to listen, you will hear an underground movement that resonates with the core of what scientific progress should have always been and what it will look like in 2, 5, and 10 years. The collision of research and crypto is a sight that's hard to ignore. DeSci startups are claiming space, and NobleBlocks will be there to support the science they are advancing by aligning incentives in scientific publishing. We are living in an era of unprecedented scientific and technological advancement, and it's an exhilarating time to be alive.
