NEW: 13 reasons why @MoJGovUK ran out of room in prisons: * It closed 10,700 places - but opened only 11,000, since 2010 * It introduced tougher sentencing - ignoring impact on prisoner numbers * It was slow to get prisons built - 20,000 places promised, only 5,200 delivered

This is where our “tough on crime” government has led us. By stripping the system of funding and shovelling more and more people into our broken prisons, they have made it literally impossible for any more offenders to be imprisoned.
Senior Presiding Judge, Edis LJ, has asked judges to adjourn, from next week, the sentencing of offenders who are on bail where custody is likely to be imposed. The prison estate is full.

If I was a Tory Chancellor, I wouldn’t abolish inheritance tax. I’d fix the ridiculous marginal rates that can exceed 70%

This is from a few weeks ago... but it seems to have been doing the rounds again today. It remains my view. I could tell you a thousand tales of the kind of humanity and heroism that would take your breath away.
Former Chief Superintendent of the @metpoliceuk John Sutherland responds to the challenges facing UK police officers today. He tells @TherealNihal, "If policing fails, then what are we left with?" Listen on @BBCSounds

A few prison facts. In 2010 there were almost 34,000 prison staff in England/Wales. Now there are less than 29,000… …but the prison population is around 1,500 higher: 87,000. Prison budget was cut by 25% between 2010 & 2017 - thousands of experienced staff left.

You will have read many times on Twitter that the UK economy has been the worst performing among the G7’s most prosperous nations since the pandemic. Said without caveat and often gleefully by a Twitter mob that revels in doing the country down. Well, now that the official stats have been revised independently, an up-to-date G7 league table shows this: the UK lagged behind only the fast-growing North American economies of the US and Canada. It has outperformed Europe’s three major economies — Germany, France and Italy, as well as Japan — since the pandemic. Who wudda thunk it?!

❝With the promised 20,000 Uplift officers now in place, the total number of police officers at 31 March 2023 stood at 147,430. This exceeds the 2009 peak and is the highest number of police officers on record. However, at 233,832, the total workforce including police staff and police community support officers (PCSOs) remains around 4.6% below its 2010 peak.❞ Read more analysis by @Wiggett_IE here: [SUBSCRIBER] policinginsight.com/features…

A reminder that police officers will be leaving their families this Christmas to keep you and yours safe, we owe those who run towards danger, work unthinkable hours and see the most horrific things the upmost respect/thanks, officers tread where others couldn’t/wouldn’t 👏🏼💙

This Christmas officers will be exposed to trauma, assaulted in alarming numbers and overwhelmed with workloads/hours worked. Let’s remind them we are thinking of them, and also their families too who lest we forget will be without their loved ones over the festive period 🌲💙
