A patient once assumed I must have been educated in Canada because I was good at what I did. I corrected the assumption.

It may sound like a small comment, but these are the subtle ways colonial thinking shows up in everyday interactions. Why do we so easily associate excellence, intelligence and expertise with the West? Africa produces brilliant nurses, doctors, scientists, educators, researchers and professionals. We don't become excellent when we arrive in Canada.
We bring excellence with us.
Sometimes, we have to challenge these assumptions out loud.
