The Shield is about a police station located in the Farmington district of Los Angeles, which is a fictional location, likely in the South Central area. The show serves as a biopic on how LA became overrun by competing gangs, drugs, cartel money and corruption. The show centers around the Strike team, an experimental crime fighting unit in the LAPD meant to bring down and control gang activity. The Strike team is led by a Napoleonic figure, Vic Mackey, who is a fearless hero, equipped with dealing in the most brutal and gruesome underworld scenarios ever depicted on television. The show brings to light the largest questions humanity faces, such as what distinguishes a good person from a bad person. How are we judged and who are we responsible for protecting? What is the meaning of friendship, and what can get in between ironclad bonds. How can human beings become motivated to act on their impulses and what drives us to the edge of committing acts of sin, whether it’s robbery, rape or murder. It's also educational in how accurate it portrays the bonds of different races that compete for turf and power in Los Angeles. What is true power, and what does it take to get things done? In the show we are educated on the value of a favor and what it means to owe someone something. But the greatest lesson that can be taught is that we will reap the storm we sew. No action goes unanswered and ultimately everyone must pay for what they’ve done and the choices they make. I am writing this because I think the show is overlooked and not appreciated enough in the culture. It is very common to hear of people who watch Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Wire, but the Shield puts those shows to shame, with its Shakespearan drama all based in the reality of the most complex city in the world. Can the spirit of the ancient warrior still thrive and live freely, or will he be chopped down by the longhouse, which seeks to dull his instincts with moralism and bureaucracy. The power of Vic Mackey is his confidence and optimism. No matter how dire the situation he finds himself in he always believes he will figure a way to get out of it. The pressure he’s under brings clarity and he’s able to triumph in impossible situations. This is the mark of a great man who lives outside of time. His Nietzschean instincts guide him to action, making him the bravest of animals, seeking fights and battles which drive his purpose and lead him to being the most effective officer in the county, despite his questionable methods. He is up against everything, horrific bloodthirsty criminals, greedy politicians, sick and weak colleagues who despise his methods, his own soldiers and ultimately his own family. The joy of the viewer is watching him navigate the beehive of life, seeing a man who is human but does not suffer from the common human weaknesses we all are subject to. From psychodrama, to action packed brutality, the show lives on the bleeding edge of humanity. It's an enticing story that never lets up from start to finish. Each episode is a brilliant cliff hanger rich in intelligence, character development, interpersonal relationships, enormous egos, and brilliant poker playing. Always know your cards and always know when to bluff and when to fold. The Shield is the greatest American crime drama ever created. “Man, the bravest of animals, and the one most accustomed to suffering, does not repudiate suffering as such; he desires it, he even seeks it out, provided he is shown a meaning for it, a purpose of suffering. The meaninglessness of suffering, not suffering itself, was the curse that lay over mankind so far.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche, On the Genealogy of Morals @MichaelChiklis #WaltonGoggins @ShawnRyanTV @bronzeagemantis
