My personal experience with AI is that most of the gen AI companies have offered me buckets of money (house money!) to publicly endorse their tools and claim they are central to my creativity (have turned them all down). What's interesting is that there are SO many people who are hyped about these tools who should be getting the bag instead of me. So all I can gather is that these companies are throwing money around to control the story about who their tools are for. Seems like they'll pay anything to have non-AI folks endorse the AI tools.

Seth Rogen is correct.
Seth Rogen says if you use AI to write your stories or scripts, then you “shouldn’t be a writer”: “Every time I see a video on Instagram that’s like, ‘Hollywood is cooked,’ what follows is the most stupid dog sh*t I’ve ever seen in my life. And if your instinct is to use AI and not go through that process. You shouldn’t be a writer. Because you’re not writing.” variety.com/2026/film/news/s…

VFX breakdown rules are weird. MI7 pushed “practical” but released CGI breakdowns to get VFX Oscar and got nominated. MI8 had similar CGI but hid it to keep the “practical” angle and got ignored. Predator Badlands released breakdowns, but had to blur talent #FilmTwitter

Some clarification here: "no green screen" doesn’t mean "no VFX”. There were, in fact, thousands of VFX shots in the film (2018!) Green screen is sometimes used in lieu of building sets or figuring out locations/lighting in advance, which can be noticeable if not done carefully, and is something we didn’t want to do. We built the entire interior of the Hail Mary ship - but within the ship, there were still wire and puppeteer removals and ceiling replacements, etc. When Ryan is outside on the hull of the ship, we shot him in front of a black background for space and a shifting hue background when he was up against the aurora of a planet which allowed for truer interactive light on him than a green screen would. The wide space exteriors and spaceship shots were entirely digital and beautifully done by ILM. Rocky was a seamless blend of puppetry and animation from Framestore. And other great work from many more. It really does take a village and we had the best of the best on our side.

Easy money doesn’t exist for more than a moment. If people charge regular rates for ai content, their margins would be insane and would instantly be undercut. Overnight their margins would go to zero
AI ads are about to cause the biggest wave of easy money the internet has ever seen for the first time in history, a solo creator with a laptop can go head-to-head with global brands - because creativity is the new leverage, not budget the winners won’t be the corporations with 20-person agencies, but people who know how to tell a story that hijacks attention in 1 second and never lets go right now the ads that print are basically mini-movies - weird characters, fast cuts, aggressive pacing, plot twists in 15 seconds and yet most marketers are still pumping out the same dead “here’s the product” content like it’s 2019 AI gives you the chance to make something so bizarre, emotional, or chaotic that people have no choice but to stop scrolling like, rt + reply with 'VAULT' and i'll send you the vault with best ai shots + prompts that you can copy (must follow so i can dm)

Here’s early stop motion tests for Jurassic Park. CGI was the better choice and made it a remarkable movie in combination with some puppetry where suitable. Practical is not better than CGI. Neither one is better, they both have pros and cons and the best results are when used in combination. I feel like the average person doesn’t understand CGI so are quick to judge it. You wouldn’t even realise how much of your favourite TV shows are CG because when it’s done well, it’s invisible. Movie studios hear people complain about CGI but don’t disseminate what people are actually criticising. It’s 2 things usually: 1️⃣ Just poor quality CGI. It does exist, but so does poor quality practical. 2️⃣ Poor “save the cat” formulaic writing relying on over saturation of visual noise that people are exhausted by. Viewers are tired of having keys jangled in front of them with CGI content that’s not grounded and isn’t meaningful to the viewer. Like later Marvel movies. Over-use basically. So what we have now is movie studios purposefully downplaying or pretending to reject CGI in order to appease people’s misconceptions. They lied about Barbie. They lied about Top Gun. I have criticisms of CGI myself, I feel bad for actors having to act solo on a green screen. At the same time if not for this technology many of the movies we love would simply not be possible. I feel passionate about this because directors, writers and producers disparaging CGI is disrespectful to the VFX artists who work hard to bring these movies to life. With all the news of over work, under pay, bad management, job loss, crunch, instability, ai job replacement etc I think it’s a bit disrespectful to treat CGI as if it’s inferior to practical. There’s use cases for both.

Here's a short clip from the VFX Notes Podcast. In this episode, we talk about the Extraction films but also about the lack of VFX representation on official behind-the-scenes featurettes and the current 'no-CGI' narrative. Apologies for the 'mini-rant' 😡 You can watch the full podcast with @beforesmag and me on YouTube: youtu.be/cX1eQqciNdw
