Guillermo del Toro tells young directors they should not listen when “people tell you art is not important,” because that is “always a prelude to fascism.” “Be kind, be involved, believe in your art. At a time when people tell you art is not important, that is always a prelude to fascism. They think they can debase everything that makes us a little better, a little more human. And that, in my book, and in my life, includes monsters," @RealGDT said. Read more here: variety.com/2026/film/news/g…

There are a hundred more important things to say, and I tried to say some of them in my essay for "Thinking About...", but: invading a country for oil is also just atavistic at this point. Even if it worked, which it won’t, it still wouldn’t work.

Reading this headline is a big proud-to-be-British moment. There is no way X should be allowed to continue letting their AI undress people non-consensually. Great to see Britain defending people and standing up to big tech. telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

With fewer and fewer people reading every year, it’s urgent that you read daily. I don’t care why you do it: because it’s good for you, good for the world, because of the joy & renewal it brings. I just need you to read. Your life will be immeasurably richer if you read.

The most powerful country on earth scared shitless of Ed Davey is a good way to see off 2025
Replying to @UnderSecPD
None of those sanctioned is a current UK or EU official—however, we know that foreign government officials are actively targeting the United States. This week, the UK’s Liberal Democrats claimed President’s Trump National Security Strategy amounts to “foreign interference” by a “hostile foreign state” because it correctly identifies mass migration and decaying national sovereignty as existential European security concerns. theguardian.com/politics/202…

"memory" is a kinder word than "surveillance database"
📁 Sam Altman says the real AI breakthrough will not be better reasoning, but total memory. An AI will be able to remember every conversation, email, and document across a person’s lifetime, identifying patterns and preferences humans never consciously express. Once memory becomes persistent, the idea of a personal assistant will fundamentally change.

ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus: "What Christmas has taught me is, above all, to be grateful. Grateful that I can celebrate it in peace with my family. And that makes me think about all the brave Ukrainian men and women who are fighting tonight to defend their country against the ruthless Russian aggressor. And remember that when they are defending their liberal democracy, they are, in fact, defending ours as well. And that they deserve all the support that they can have from us." Thank you! ❤️‍🩹

I’m seeing a shocking amount of love on the timeline for David Copperfield, The Count of Monte Cristo & other classics. People are opening these books and discovering that they’re hypnotically readable. They’ve been beloved for generations because they’re terrific stories.

When Putin emphatically endorses Trump’s National Security Strategy, it gives the game away.
Putin to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte: What nonsense is he saying? I'd really like to ask him: Listen, what are you saying about a war with Russia? You can read, right? Then read the new US National Security strategy. The USA is the key player in NATO, the main sponsor of NATO. Russia is not mentioned as an enemy [in the new security strategy]. But NATO Secretary General is getting ready for a war with us. What is that? You can read, can't you? How are you targeting NATO for a war with Russia if the main NATO country does not see us as an adversary and an enemy?

Over six years ago, I published an 11,000 word article in The Atlantic (gift link below) explaining how Donald Trump was, beyond any question, mentally ill and unfit to hold any office of public trust. He has proven these points virtually every day since. theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…
