Jobs and development without clearing
The common objection is that conservation destroys rural jobs. Under this design the opposite occurs. The fund replaces the income that would have come from expansion with income that comes from protection and development. Governments can hire people for monitoring, fire control, community forestry, ecological education, and restoration. Schools and universities can expand training in biological sciences and land management. Infrastructure and housing programs create construction and maintenance work. Healthcare expansion creates medical and support jobs. These are ongoing public-sector opportunities funded by the external transfer, not one-time clearances.
For communities living beside the forest, the choice shifts from “clear or stay poor” to “protect and receive services, education, and employment.” That is the practical mechanism that makes preservation politically and economically sustainable inside the rainforest countries.
Conditionality makes it work
The payments are not unconditional aid. They continue only while the forest remains. Automatic penalties—loss of the annual transfer plus additional financial consequences—apply if satellite data show new conversion of primary forest or peat. This removes the incentive to take the money and clear the forest anyway. International monitoring supports transparency; domestic institutions decide how to spend the funds, provided the forest outcome is met.
The total sum is large enough to matter, small enough as a share of developed-country GDP to be feasible, and structured so that both sides have a continuing reason to stay in the arrangement. Rainforest countries receive more reliable income than they currently earn from expansion. The rest of the world pays a modest, predictable amount to avoid the larger costs of continued deforestation. The jobs and services funded by the transfer give people inside the rainforest countries a direct stake in keeping the forest standing.
This is not a small pilot or a voluntary pledge. It is a standing transfer sized to the economic reality of the forests and the ability of richer countries to pay. With clear rules, satellite verification, and automatic consequences, it turns the global benefit of intact rainforest into a local economic asset.
The rest of the world should pay a rainforest tax to countries with rainforests to keep them standing.
Share if you agree. Rainforests are the entire world's responsibility to preserve.

True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.
