In light of the recent acts of police brutality and other forms of violence against Black people, including the acts seen at protests around the United States, the film team behind “Silence Sam” has decided to temporarily release this film to Youtube. youtube.com/watch?v=o9uQKmRi…

Today is University Day @UNC. Started in 1877 by white supremacists to mark the restoration of their power after Reconstruction by linking it to & glorifying the Univ.'s settler colonial origin story.
It should be a day to reckon with those legacies, not celebrate them.

This week has been a punishing seminar on the topic of Universities as violent institutions. Feeling thankful for fellow activists, students, staff, and community who continue to advance this campus's rich historical curriculum of struggle and resistance.

In @UNCPolice cop propoganda post, Chief David Perry writes “we have been making strides as a department since my arrival one year ago.”
Here is a list of things UNCPD has done in the past year.
Thank YOU for sharing and for all that you do!
Have you seen this Silence Sam film? Please check it out if you haven’t. This film embodies the power of youth organizing and shows the history behind the changes that we see now at UNC. Thank you @symonesees for sharing the link and for being a light.

Take note of two important words missing from this article:
Student. Activists.
Yet another arm of the UNC PR apparatus staying on message by erasing the labor of generations of activists. They did the research, they made the demand. But UNC continues to claim credit.
Charles B. Aycock (class of 1880), Josephus Daniels (class of 1885), Julian S. Carr and Thomas Ruffin Sr. have left the buildings. The @UNC Board of Trustees voted to remove the naming honors for the namesakes’ connections to white supremacy. unc.live/39DZWQ7

"Documentary" doesn't even fully describe what BIPOC mediamakers who go against colonial norms are doing with their work. They're reawakening our spirit. I'm going to need a new word.

This week @UNC sent out a fundraiser asking folks to donate money for bottles of “Old Well water"... that don't actually have water from the Old Well in them.
So, it's time to talk about how the Old Well’s history, symbolism & traditions are rooted in white supremacy.

As we celebrate this exciting news, let's thank the activists, students and staff who made this change happen, not the university. This is a big win for activists, but on @UNC’s part, it is still the bare minimum they can do.

We know we've supported this fund in the past, but due to their lack of accountability and the way they’ve treated Maya, we are withdrawing our support from @takeactionch

If you are donating to funds, please make sure the people who are supposed to be receiving this money actually are! So many funds are not clear about how decisions are made and who is in charge. This is SO problematic and easy to miss. We missed it. But we all need to do better.
We should be supporting black organizers and activists actually doing the work. And the places we give money to should be a reflection of that support. Follow @readkropotkin for info on funds/ where to donate.
