Expensive gas – not net-zero – is driving up bills
Net-zero is, in fact, "helping to shelter Britain from the impact of expensive gas", says @ACJSissons

I’m in Switzerland with Nexus – Tyne and Wear Metro, looking at cost-effective electrification renewals. Much of what makes this work efficient is what the UK sector has been calling for for a long time; it has just been put into practice. A few lessons (1/7) 🧵

For example: on the West Coast Main Line, a diesel Class 66 slows down to 25mph over Shap summit, and a bi-mode Class 88 down to 48mph.
Two fully electric Class 90 trains can run in tandem at 75mph.
Only full electrification will deliver for both passengers and freight.

Seeing as Andy that is still only discussing how to fund HS2, I'm actually feeling less confident that it will ever reach Manchester. Even HS1 required government funding in the end, but no one would argue it shouldn't have been built. 1/2 #HS2

Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.

Work has started to transform Barking Eurohub into Britain’s gateway for European rail #freight.
It's a big step forward in the Government’s plans to grow rail freight and re-establish direct cross-Channel freight services through the Channel Tunnel:

Yesterday, we began a new operational trial using a Class 93 locomotive on our intermodal services between Daventry and Coatbridge.
This is the first time we've operated a C93 in service and, over the next two weeks, we'll be assessing its performance.

Sad to see anti-cycling campaigners Vincent Stops & John Stewart accusing us of some sort of cover up.
We've been clear. Falling cycle deaths is good news, but rising numbers of serious injuries shows we've much more to do. Hence our new Vision Zero plan - inc more bike lanes.

Today is International Level Crossing Awareness Day. #ILCAD
Every year, accidents happen on level crossings - some are fatal.
Please - always concentrate at level crossings
Last year we closed a level crossing in Gateshead after near misses involving cyclists, pedestrians and a dog walker. 😰
Always be aware of your surroundings at a level crossing!
