I want a brighter and more abundant future (than I had) for my son and others of his generation. That means building a lot more stuff in the highest opportunity places in the country.
This thread is such a perfect encapsulation of the "lead paint caucus" mindset: "When I was young, I had to choose between living in a lead paint filled shithole, moving to a sprawlburg, or uprooting my life and relocating to another city. And so should you!"

The fact that the polls show people supported it after the fact actually further confirms the central point, which is that you need movements that are willing to be unpopular and are committed to changing public opinion in their favor!

Amazon General Incompetence has been achieved
It looks like Amazon AGI division is being shut down and their foundational models Nova are being sunset. Along the same lines they are shutting down Q IDE (autocomplete and chat in IDE), also abandoning efforts to train code-generation models. futurism.com/artificial-inteโ€ฆ

Dem Opposition to the permitting reform bill is mad that Trump might use it to give Americans cheaper electricity and cheaper gas. Incredible stuff here.
Replying to @SiegelScribe
Given that precedent, the senators are concerned the Trump admin would unfairly implement provisions of the bill that would give the federal government more power to approve interstate transmission lines and natural gas pipelines over the objections of states

Fictional Matt opposed a fictionally unpopular civil rights bill in fictional 1963. This guyโ€™s persuasive capabilities are incredible when he imagines everything he wants to be true.
Mehdi makes up a fictional Matt Yglesias to get mad at for not supporting an unpopular civil rights bill without knowing that the actual civil rights bill was popular at the time. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ

โ€œThe Matthew Yglesias of 1963 would have been telling [JFK and LBJ] donโ€™t touch this civil rights bill. Itโ€™s unpopular.โ€ I thought this was one of the more fascinating and important exchanges with @mattyglesias, where I challenged him on how far politicians should defer to polls on huge moral issues, and he pushed back on my analogy. Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mehdi conflates bill approval with protest approval. "This civil rights bill" was popular in '63. It had +16 approval (54-38) by Aug. '63 & +30 (61-31) in Jan. '64 before its June passage. Desegregation was generally popular w/ >+30 support for SCOTUS anti-segregation rulings news.gallup.com/poll/3427/mostโ€ฆ

.@SenDuckworth, Merkley, Markey, and Wyden want to make your lives worse.
Scoop in @PunchbowlNews AM: 4 Senate Democrats led by @SenDuckworth are pushing back on the bipartisan permitting reform bill, arguing it will further enable Trump to favor fossil fuel projects and wonโ€™t stop its attacks on clean energy. Merkley, Markey, Wyden join new letter

Democrats need to remember that Donald Trump will not be president in two years, and given his popularity, a member of their own party very likely will be.

One of the most consequential cases unfolding here, imho.
Very big ruling today from the appeals court on Seattleโ€™s tenant protections. For the first time a court has basically said there is a limit to how far govt can go before itโ€™s a โ€œtakingโ€ courts.wa.gov/opinions/pdf/8โ€ฆ 1/

Humanity is trapped in an eternal discourse loop. Every question has been answered. โ€œWhat if women dress like whores at the gym?โ€ Plato speaks of this! Republic, Book V!

So it occurred to me listening to a podcast on the history of Ford, that everyone was super duper mad at the capitalist railroads for gouging them and treating their employees like shit. But at the same time, essentially all the railroads have gone bankrupt.

So it seems much more likely that in the railroad era people got access to a tremendous innovation, but at the same time nobody knew how money works or what things actually cost, so everyone was mad about it. Anyways, probably nothing to learn from that.

While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: cohere.com/blog/concerning-bโ€ฆ

A lot of people are protesting this post by saying "Abdul is a real talent, it's just that his own party is fighting him" Guys, I hate to break the bad news, but if you can't consolidate your own party's support you're not actually a major political talent.
I keep seeing Abdul supporters saying heโ€™s a major political talent. The GOP hasnโ€™t won a Senate seat in Michigan in 32 years and Trumpโ€™s approval is below sea level yet this race is margin of error. I voted for him but heโ€™s objectively a weak candidate in this environment.

I think the fundamental YIMBY insight is that, if you live in a society which imposes artificial scarcity on basic necessities like housing and health care, then there is no amount of redistribution which will make them broadly available to the poor. You need supply-side changes.

I mean Cenk is dumb and a bigot. Everyone knows this. But this ad is dumb and bigoted at scale. Itโ€™s innumerate and morally obtuse and if anything remotely like it was aimed at Muslims he and his ilk would (defensibly) be outraged. But this shit is fine when aimed at the you know who.
New @RebellionPac ad dropping in Michigan. We have to suffer here at home, so Israel can get all its wars. Thatโ€™s why they buy politicians like Mike Rogers. He promised to serve Israel โ€œunconditionally,โ€ but never made that promise to you.
