Iran is the key to the Middle East. The region has split into two rival camps.
→ Blue: Israel, UAE, Egypt, Greece, Azerbaijan, India
→ Red: Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, tied by the Mecca Pact of August
→ Green: Iran, the common enemy that nobody defends
So what happens if Iran's regime falls and green joins blue?
Today's balance
Blue and red roughly cancel out. Iran keeps blue busy with one enemy. Red never defended Tehran, but never joined the attack either: the Mecca Pact officially targets no one, and Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials even went to Tehran on 26 October to stop the war restarting.
If the regime falls
Blue would gain Iran's size, its Gulf coast and its borders with Turkey, Iraq and Pakistan. Israel would lose its main enemy and gain a friendly neighbour on Turkey's and Pakistan's doorstep. Red could not match that, and in power politics the outnumbered camp becomes the next target. Hence the talk of "Turkey next after Iran", though we found it only in opinion pieces and one Israeli official's warning to Ynet about the Mecca Pact, not in any known plan.
Why Turkey resists
Turkey and Iran have kept a cold peace along the same border since 1639. Ankara prefers a weak but standing Iran to a collapsed one, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan opposes military intervention, and after Iraq and Syria Turkey fears another refugee wave. In our reading, it is protecting a buffer and a balance.
India and Pakistan
Pakistan is bound to Saudi Arabia by a 2025 defence deal and the Mecca Pact. India is a partner of Israel and the UAE, linked to them by a planned trade corridor to Europe. Two nuclear rivals on opposite sides of a Middle Eastern fight make any crisis harder to contain, though our sources show neither fighting in the Gulf.
Iran is the lock holding the balance. Break it, and the red camp is next.

According to Le Monde's sources, the humanitarian mission of evacuating civilians from the Russia-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky in the Kherson region was organised by Russian and Ukrainian intelligence services, rather than any third party.
The mission was the result of several months of negotiations between Russians and Ukrainians, but the two sides eventually agreed to present it as the result of Melania Trump's mediation.
Both Ukraine and Russia are seeking to win Donald Trump over to their side, so given Trump's obsession with "peace" achievements yet no prospect of being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the idea is that Melania Trump's alleged mediation may earn her that award.
