Open Letter To: His Excellency Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation His Excellency Sergey Lavrov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church @KremlinRussia_E @mfa_russia Subject: Urgent Concern Regarding the Massacre of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia Date: 29 October 2026 Your Excellencies and Your Holiness, I write this open letter with profound sorrow and urgency to raise the plight of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians who have been subjected to deadly attacks in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. These events coincide with the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in Moscow for the Third Russia-Africa Summit. According to statements from the Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, at least 60 Orthodox Christian faithful were killed in two attacks in the Arsi Zone of Oromia. On 20 October 2026, 14 people were killed in Gora Silingo in Merti Woreda. On 24 October 2026, 46 more were killed in the areas of Tereta, Chole, and Birbo in Shirka Woreda. More than 20 people were seriously injured, and approximately 20 homes were burned. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victims included women, the elderly, and children, and that the attacks involved coordinated assaults on civilian communities. Church authorities have described the killings as brutal and merciless massacres that violate the right to life and freedom of religion, and that undermine Ethiopia’s traditions of peaceful coexistence among its peoples. These attacks form part of a documented pattern of violence against Orthodox Christian communities in Oromia, including previous incidents in the Arsi area that have resulted in deaths, displacement, and the destruction or looting of churches and homes. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church has repeatedly called on authorities to protect civilians and to bring those responsible to justice. Security forces reportedly reached the scene of the larger attack but were unable to prevent the killings. In the aftermath, reports indicate that dozens of residents who assisted with burials or care for the wounded have been detained. I address you at this moment because of Russia’s longstanding relations with Ethiopia, the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, and the deep historical and spiritual ties between the Russian Orthodox Church and the ancient Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s presence in Moscow provides an immediate opportunity for dialogue. We respectfully urge: • The Government of the Russian Federation, through President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov, to raise with the Ethiopian leadership the need for effective protection of civilian populations, impartial investigation of these and prior attacks, accountability for perpetrators, and measures to prevent further violence against Orthodox Christian and other vulnerable communities in Oromia. • His Holiness Patriarch Kirill and the Russian Orthodox Church to express solidarity with the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the bereaved communities, and to encourage peaceful coexistence and the safeguarding of religious freedom in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. Its faithful have suffered repeated targeted violence in recent years. We ask that these killings not pass in silence while Ethiopia’s Prime Minister attends the summit in Moscow, and that all parties with influence use it constructively to protect innocent lives and uphold the rule of law. I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and my prayers for the recovery of the injured and the safety of those still at risk. Respectfully, Elias United States of America 🇺🇸

🇪🇹 60 REPORTED DEAD IN ETHIOPIA: CHRISTIANS DESERVE MORE THAN CONSTITUTIONAL PROMISES ✝️💔 Ethiopia is one of the oldest Christian nations on earth. For more than 1,600 years, Christian communities have worshipped, built churches, preserved their traditions, and passed their faith from one generation to the next. Yet today, Christians continue to face deadly violence, attacks on churches, discrimination, and pressure for their beliefs. 🚨 OCTOBER 2026: 60 PEOPLE REPORTED KILLED According to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, at least 60 people were killed in two attacks in the Oromia region: 🔴 October 20 — 14 people reportedly killed in Merti district. 🔴 October 24 — 46 people reportedly killed in Sherka district. More than 20 people were reportedly seriously injured, and homes were burned. Responsibility for the attacks remains disputed, and those responsible must be identified through a credible investigation. These are not just numbers. They represent lives lost, families shattered, and communities left grieving. 💔 ⚖️ ETHIOPIA’S LAWS PROMISE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM Constitutional protections: • Article 11: Separates state and religion and prohibits a state religion. • Article 25: Guarantees equality before the law and equal protection. • Article 27: Protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the right to adopt and practice a faith. • International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Article 18: Protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. Criminal Code provisions affecting religious expression and worship: • Article 492: Addresses interference with authorized religious ceremonies and the desecration of places or objects used for worship. • Article 816: Penalizes certain public statements or conduct deemed blasphemous or grossly offensive toward religion and religious beliefs. These provisions must be understood in their legal context and applied consistently with constitutional and international human rights protections. 💔 THE REALITY EXTENDS BEYOND THE LAW Churches have been attacked and burned. Worshippers have been killed. Christians who convert from one faith or denomination to another can face rejection, threats, and social exclusion. In areas affected by armed conflict, vulnerable communities face continuing insecurity. No constitution can protect religious freedom through words alone. Authorities must protect civilians, investigate attacks, prosecute those responsible through fair proceedings, and ensure that every Christian can worship without fear. Ethiopia’s Christians are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for the right to live, worship, gather, and raise their families in safety. Sixty reported deaths must not become another forgotten headline. Pray for the victims and their families. Stand with Ethiopia’s Orthodox, Protestant, and Pentecostal communities. Demand justice, accountability, and equal protection for every person. ✝️ Constitutional rights must mean real protection. Religious freedom must be more than words on paper. #Ethiopia #ChristiansInEthiopia #AmharaChristians #OromoChristians #ReligiousFreedom #Article27 #EndChristianPersecution

💔🇪🇹 BREAKING: AMHARA DISPLACED CIVILIANS HIT BY A DEVASTATING DRONE STRIKE IN ETHIOPIA Imagine surviving massacres, fleeing your home in search of safety, only to have the place where you sought refuge destroyed as well. 💔 Reports emerging from Jara IDP Camp in North Wollo, Ethiopia, on October 29, 2026, describe a devastating drone strike that reportedly killed and injured displaced Amhara civilians, including children, women, elderly people, and religious fathers.✝️ These families had already fled massacres in Wollega, Oromia, hoping to find safety. Now, reports say the camp has been burned to the ground, leaving survivors homeless and facing yet another unimaginable tragedy!!😔 Where can innocent civilians go when even their places of refuge are no longer safe? Internally displaced people are civilians who deserve protection, dignity, and the basic right to live without fear. Attacks that harm civilians and civilian shelters must be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with international humanitarian law. Casualty figures and details are still being confirmed. The victims and survivors must not be forgotten, and their suffering must not be met with silence. 🙏 Pray for the innocent victims, the injured, and every family left with nothing. May the survivors find safety, comfort, and justice. The world must pay attention. Nine Christians were killed in Jordan and at least 60 more in Ethiopia over the past week. The two separate massacres in the Middle East and Africa underscore the dangers Christians worldwide face because of their faith. In Jordan, gunmen opened fire on Christian mourners inside a church, killing nine people and wounding around 40 others. In Ethiopia, attackers went from house to house, killing 60 Christians with guns and knives, destroying their homes. The attacks come as Christians in the United States and around the world prepare to gather this Sunday for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, to pray for believers facing persecution because of their faith. What is happening in parts of the Oromia region, including Wollega, Arsi, and Shewa, deserves serious attention. According to some reports, at least 3 million innocent Amhara civilians have been displaced, their property looted, their land seized, and thousands killed or injured. These reports of violence and displacement are deeply concerning and must not be ignored. The suffering of Amhara civilians deserves international attention, and any acts of violence, forced displacement, and ethnic persecution must be strongly condemned. The world must speak up for the Amhara people, demand accountability for those responsible, and call for an immediate end to the violence. No innocent civilian should be targeted because of their ethnicity or Religion, and no community should be forced to live in fear in its own homeland. Ahmara life matters

🚨 At least 23 Amhara civilians killed and many others injured as @AbiyAhmedAli regime launches three successive drone strikes on IDP camp in Tehuledere Woreda, South Wollo Zone At least 23 displaced Amhara civilians were killed and numerous others injured on October 29th, 2026, following three successive drone strikes by the Abiy regime against Turk Camp, an internally displaced persons (IDP) shelter near Hayq Town in Tehuledere Woreda, South Wollo Zone, Amhara Region. The first strike occurred at approximately 1:10 PM, targeting a camp administered under the nearby Jari IDP shelter system. The camp housed Amhara civilians who had previously survived massacres and attacks in Sibu Sire, Gida Ayana, Gida Kiremu and other parts of East Wollega, as well as West Wollega and Kellem Wollega Zones, before fleeing to Amhara Region in search of safety. According to sources on the ground, the drone continued circling above the camp following the initial strike, preventing survivors from safely evacuating the wounded. As displaced civilians attempted to rescue those injured in the first attack, a second drone missile struck the area, causing additional casualties. A third strike reportedly followed, further increasing the death toll and obstructing rescue efforts. As of the latest update, 23 civilian bodies had been recovered, while additional remains were reportedly still burning at the scene. Numerous wounded civilians were transported by Red Cross ambulances to Hayq for emergency medical treatment. The final death toll remains unknown. The attack comes amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions at displacement camps across Amhara Region. Displaced residents interviewed by local sources said they had recently demanded permission to return to their former communities because of severe food shortages, declaring, “Let us return to our former homes. Hunger is killing us here.”
🚨 @AbiyAhmedAli regime drone strikes and artillery shelling kill a young girl, injure three children and destroy farmland in Ambassel Woreda, South Wollo Zone An ENDF artillery strike on October 27th, 2026, killed a young girl and injured three other children in Tere, Ambassel Woreda, South Wollo Zone, Amhara Region. A mortar shell struck the residence of Mr. Adem Yimer, killing the girl instantly and leaving three other children with serious and minor injuries. A drone strikes targeted the Ziha and Teleyayen areas of Ambassel Woreda, where farmers’ teff crops were set ablaze and destroyed.

THREAT INTELLIGENCE BRIEFING Night Massacre of Orthodox Christians Reported in Arsi, Ethiopia Sunday, October 25, 2026 UNCLASSIFIED // OPEN SOURCE BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT Armed attackers struck three rural villages in Shirka district, Arsi, in Ethiopia's Oromia Region on Friday night, October 23, shooting residents and burning homes. The Arsi Diocese of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church reports 42 killed and 18 wounded. Local sources and families put the toll at 47 or more. Neither figure has been independently confirmed. The attackers have not been identified, and no group has claimed responsibility. WHAT HAPPENED - The attack began around 10 PM local time in the villages of Birbo, Chole, and Sole Guna. - According to families and local sources, armed men surrounded farming households, blocked escape routes, opened fire, and set homes on fire. Property and livestock were reportedly looted. - The church says many others were displaced. - Residents of the district town of Gobesa say they begged police and security forces to respond while the homes were burning, and were told there were no orders to deploy. This claim has not been verified. THE ATTACKERS - Unidentified. Families describe local armed groups joined by extremists from the neighboring Bale area. This is unconfirmed. - Ethiopian authorities have blamed past attacks in Arsi on the Oromo Liberation Army, which has denied them. No one has been publicly blamed or arrested for this attack. CURRENT STATUS - We have found no detailed public statement yet from the federal or Oromia regional government. - No independent investigation has been announced. - Social media claims about a mass burial and the exact location of the killings are unverified. WHY IT MATTERS Shirka district has seen repeated mass killings of Orthodox Christians since 2023. The church reported 36 killed in November 2023 and 21 killed in February 2026. From October 12 to 17, at least 6 were killed and 5 abducted in Shirka and neighboring Honkolo Wabe, and a priest was badly wounded. Ethiopia's state human rights commission called for more security forces in Arsi back in March. A church worker says four churches in the district have stopped holding services. LESSONS FOR CHURCH SAFETY TEAMS 1. Night attacks on homes are a recurring pattern in persecution zones. Missions teams traveling abroad need evacuation, communication, and check-in plans before they go. 2. When attackers block the escape routes, response time decides the outcome. Know how long your local police take to respond, and plan to protect people until they arrive. 3. Pray for and support the persecuted church through trusted ministries working on the ground. 4. Check claims before you share them. Exaggerated numbers hurt the victims' cause. Please pray for the families who lost loved ones, for the wounded and displaced, and for the Orthodox Christians of Arsi. Details may change as more information is confirmed.

🚨 Between October 25th and 27th, attacks by Oromia Region Gada Commando and other regional security forces targeted Amhara civilian communities in Tulu Gana, Chancho and Bejet, Abi Dengoro Woreda. Search and burial operations recovered 75 civilian bodies, including 65 buried on October 27th. Among those killed were Sheikh Mohamed Arab, the chief imam of the local mosque, and Ato Ademale along with nine members of his family.
🚨 Over 200 Amhara civilians killed by Oromia Region Gada Commando and ENDF attacks across Wollega, with 13 villages destroyed, three churches burned and thousands displaced New details have emerged following the reported massacre of approximately 80 Amhara civilians, predominantly women, infants, children and elderly residents, in Sibu Sire Woreda, East Wollega Zone, on October 28th, 2026. The victims were fleeing ongoing attacks in Gida Ayana Woreda and traveling toward Addis Ababa when Oromia Region Gada Commando forces intercepted their crowded public bus at a checkpoint near Sire Town, approximately 55 kilometers from Nekemte. The passengers, along with the driver and his assistant, were allegedly forced into a nearby forest and killed with machetes and knives. The displaced civilians had previously paid 3,000 birr per person to cross the Anger River in an attempt to escape the violence. Additional reports indicate that more than 60 displaced civilians were killed within 24 hours during a separate attack on an internally displaced persons (IDP) shelter camp near the Anger River. The death toll may be higher, with recovery efforts and efforts to establish the full number of victims remaining incomplete. ▪️Guto Gida Woreda – Over 4,500 displaced civilians trapped in Uke More than 4,500 displaced Amhara civilians attempting to reach Addis Ababa were intercepted and forcibly redirected by local administration officials into a single displacement camp in Uke, Guto Gida Woreda. Over the preceding two weeks, the camp was surrounded by Oromia Region Gada Commando, Gachana Sirna and Oromia Special Forces. Facing severe food shortages and fearing another massacre, displaced families issued urgent appeals for protection. ▪️Anger Gutin – Three buses carrying displaced women and children intercepted On the morning of October 28th, Oromia regional security personnel intercepted three public buses carrying displaced civilians, predominantly women and children, fleeing Anger Gutin near Nekemte. The buses were forced to turn back and redirected to Mender 14 (Village 14). Sources stated that regional authorities were restricting the departure of women and children in an attempt to prevent a complete civilian exodus from the area. ▪️Horo Guduru Wollega Zone – 75 civilian bodies recovered in Abi Dengoro Woreda Between October 25th and 27th, attacks by Oromia Region Gada Commando and other regional security forces targeted civilian communities in Tulu Gana, Chancho and Bejet, Abi Dengoro Woreda. Search and burial operations recovered 75 civilian bodies, including 65 buried on October 27th. Among those killed were Sheikh Mohamed Arab, the chief imam of the local mosque, and Ato Ademale along with nine members of his family. Additional residents remain missing. The violence has left more than 13 villages destroyed and three churches burned, while over 160,000 civilians have been displaced from the Gida Ayana area amid continuing attacks since August. The destruction of homes, religious institutions and agricultural livelihoods has further intensified the humanitarian emergency across East Wollega and Horo Guduru Wollega Zones. The latest developments point to an expanding humanitarian crisis, with displaced civilians facing attacks along evacuation routes, restrictions on movement, food shortages and limited access to protection.

Boda, Ba’eta St. Mary (2008) Ethio Focus News stated that information concerning the remaining 14 churches is still being collected and that additional findings will be published as further details emerge. The reported destruction of these religious institutions adds to concerns about continuing attacks on Amhara and Orthodox Christian communities, widespread displacement and damage to civilian infrastructure across Oromia Region.
