Things you may have missed about last night's loss to the Houston Rockets:
San Antonio never led by more than a single point all night. They repeatedly climbed back to tie or take 1-point leads, but Houston controlled the game script, forcing San Antonio to expend energy playing from behind. (1/4) 🧵
Alperen Sengün dropped 29 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists on 50% shooting in 36 minutes. San Antonio chose to stay home on Houston’s shooters, which allowed Sengün to operate as an offensive hub on the block, picking apart single coverage and generating looks without committing turnovers. (3/4)
Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs continue to struggle at the rim.
Looking at the shot chart, the Spurs were ice-cold around the restricted area (the zone right at the rim), while Houston shot 48.7% and was on fire directly under the cup. (4/4)
Even the deciding shot was missed there thanks to Amen Thompson's block.

The guy in the cowboy hat next to LeBron spends about $500,000 a year on courtside seats, and he pays for it with rent from retirees who can't take their homes and leave.
His name is James Goldstein. He's been to more than 5,000 NBA games, and he owns trailer parks in Southern California.
Here's the thing about trailer parks most people never think about. You own your home, but you rent the little patch of dirt it sits on. And "mobile" homes almost never move. The Supreme Court looked at this back in 1992 and noted that only about 1 in 100 ever gets moved once it's set down. Moving one can eat a huge chunk of what the house is even worth, and a lot of parks won't accept older homes anyway.
So if the landlord raises your lot rent, you can pay it, or you can walk away from a house you own outright.
That's basically the whole business model. It's why more than 100 cities and counties in California put rent control on mobile home parks, and it's why Goldstein has spent decades fighting them in court.
In 2006 he bought Colony Cove, a park for seniors in Carson, for about $23 million, most of it borrowed. The next year he asked the city to let him raise rent $618 a month per lot. The city said no. He's sued Carson at least eight times since, including a $78 million claim a state judge threw out. A federal jury gave him $3.3 million in 2016, and an appeals court took it back two years later.
In Palm Springs he tried something smarter. He moved to break his El Dorado park into individually owned lots, which can knock out local rent control and leave residents choosing between buying the ground under their own house or paying market rent. The city paid him $937,500 to settle, and the appeals ruling from that fight gave park owners all over California a legal path to do the same thing. It took a new state law in 2013 to let cities block those conversions when residents don't want them.
To give him his due, Goldstein argues rent control is unfair to owners, and when it comes to apartments a lot of economists would back him up. Trailer parks are where that argument gets a lot harder to make, because leaving means hauling your house down the freeway.
Now do the math on that 2007 raise. $618 a month comes out to about $7,400 a year per lot. The raise on roughly 67 lots would pay for an entire season of his courtside seats.

Most teams take college retreads in the G League Draft.
The Spurs? They went up to Canada to draft Justin Ndjock-Tadjore at No. 12- a 6'8" point-forward who dropped 29 in the U SPORTS title game and reps Canada’s 3x3 national team.
Peak San Antonio scouting finding a high-feel connector with legitimate playmaking chops outside of the border. Keep your eye on this development project in Austin.
Yes, Amen Thompson made the defensive play of the night erasing Wemby at the buzzer, but he finished with the worst +/- of any Rockets player.
Devin Vassell and Dylan Harper gave him all he could handle all night but one legendary stop erased 36 minutes of his defensive bleeding.
Can a team kick you out (or not let you in) for what’s on your t-shirt?
The Department of Justice is reviewing the ejection of fans over biological sex/advocacy shirts at Providence Park, zeroing in on viewpoint discrimination because the stadium is city-owned.
If you attend NBA or WNBA games in publicly owned arenas, this ruling will define fan speech for years to come.
No excuses tonight in Dallas.
Cooper Flagg, Dereck Lively II, Santi Aldama, and Caleb Martin are OUT, with Kyrie and Risacher questionable for the Mavs.
The Spurs are down Tobias Harris and rookie Jayden Quaintance, but facing an absolute skeleton crew. San Antonio HAS to get off the schnid and pick up win No. 1.
Former lottery pick Jeremy Sochan was just drafted No. 1 overall in the NBA G League Draft by the Texas Legends.
Because he was an unsigned free agent entering Year 5 (meaning he's ineligible for a two-way deal), Jeremy Sochan officially entered the G League Draft pool to stay active and in game shape.
Now he's signing a standard G League contract- not an NBA affiliate deal. Which means the Mavericks don't hold his NBA rights and that any of the 30 NBA teams can sign him to a standard NBA contract at any point during the season.
The undefeated Hawks blew out the Hornets by 47 points on Friday night and that matters in San Antonio.
Brian Wright held onto that 2027 Atlanta first because rival GMs treat unprotected picks from volatile teams like pure equity for landing a legit player but he may have waited too long.
Atlanta opening 2–0 with an offensive explosion wasn't on the script. Every Hawks win trims a little leverage off San Antonio's war chest.
The other San Antonio owned Atlanta pick from last year? The vision in 2022 when they traded away Dejounte Murray was that Atlanta would collapse by now, and the 2026 pick swap would easily land a top-5 prize.
The Hawks made the playoffs and the pick turned into #20.
Spurs grabbed Jayden Quaintance- a solid value- with that pick, but the massive equity swing never arrived.

After 13 straight WNBA Finals press conferences without being called on, I finally got to ask Rhyne Howard and coach Karl Smesko why the Dream skip the anthem.
Neither explained why & Atlanta PR shut down follow-ups: “Next question.”
Mitch Johnson is getting a lot of undeserved heat, these two suggestions are the only two I'm adding 'cause I actually believe he'll get everything else under control:
1️⃣ Taris Reed is exactly the type of ultra competitive, defensive big this squad needs right now. I love Luke but don't make me roll out all the bad tape. Just please find some minutes for Reed Jr, somewhere. Your team's +/- stats will thank you. I promise.
2️⃣ Carter Bryant needs more development floor time. I'll have more hard data for ya on this later, but trust me when I say that sitting him is not helping him or your team at all.

The Spurs play the Dallas Mavericks Saturday night on the second night of a back-to-back.
Dallas was pouncing on the Pacers when Cooper Flag went down and didn't return. Mavs eventually lost and are also 0-2.
Spurs CANNOT afford to leave Dallas 0–3 tonight. You think Spurs Twitter is in meltdown mode now? Just wait.
