OBAMA: He pulled out of the JCPOA, starts this war—Seven months later, six months after they declared victory, how's that war going?  Our allies and our bases have been attacked. Americans have been killed. Hundreds of Americans have been wounded. We have run down our stock of missiles. And Iran now has veto power over the strait of hormuz, where oil goes through to the world market.  This is the reason why the price of oil is up. Nobody disputes that. This is the reason the price of diesel is up. This is the reason why the price of just about everything is up. Meanwhile, you got the defense secretary who's squarely focused on important matters: the jawlines and testosterone levels of our troops.  These are not serious people. And the problem is you end up having to pay the price for their lack of seriousness.

1/x AI and the Elections. Vivek Ramaswamy’s Vile Attack Ad. #NYT175 Coverage. @Sree and I will discuss these topics and review the Sunday New York Times on Ep. 414 of The Sunday #NYTReadalong. 📅 Sunday, Oct. 25 ⏰ 8:30 a.m. ET Details, viewing links and replay: digimentors.group/post/ep-41… Bad actors aren't just spreading political misinformation on social media. They're building fake news websites designed to influence what AI chatbots tell voters. And Vivek Ramaswamy’s ad? There’s only one word for it. Disgusting. Produced by @digimentors in partnership with @scroll_in and Scroll Global. Thank you to our sponsors, @MuckRack (@gregory) and @graphichisco (@WalterDGreason and @Dieselfunk).

2/x In addition to AI and the Elections and the Ramaswamy ad, @sree and I will also discuss how Jeffrey Schmalz turned his AIDS into a beat for @nytimes and a piece by Ellie Kemper in which she annotates a 2008 essay by Nora Ephron, as part of the ongoing #NYT175 coverage. There's also a special 28-page Sunday Times section, #WeedWars by former #NYTReadalong guest @andreafelliott. It examines whether legalizing cannabis can repair the harm caused by the war on drugs, as longtime residents and wealthy newcomers compete to open stores in gentrifying Hudson, N.Y. The full PDF is on our website. We also have two Times announcements to share, about the passing of John Geddes and a promotion for @columbiajourn alum @puiwingtam. A meetup in midtown NYC of Old Timers from Bloomberg this week reminded me of three big things: COMPANIES CHANGE. The Bloomberg of today - the established media giant - bears little resemblance to the place we worked in the 1990s when it was defined by the intensity of start-up energy and hustle culture. PEOPLE CHANGE. Whatever beef you had with anyone you worked with 30 years ago has been (or should be) forgotten. Everyone is happy to just show up and reminisce. TIMES CHANGE. Fewer and fewer people retire from corporate America these days. Many are let go - often earlier than they would like. If you are early in your career it's worth anticipating and preparing for all three of those scenarios.

Let the poor have fun ‘Every time a tech savant wants to flog his stuff in India, he feels he has to explain how it will be useful to the poor. This has shaped a mainstream assumption that what the poor should do with their lives is only fight poverty, cure their diarrhoeas, escape death or valiantly educate themselves beneath a streetlight (to enter professions where we hold all the cards). In reality, most of the time they are just trying to have a good time, like us. And every time a technology has triumphed among the poor, it has been for the same reason that it became popular among the rich: it is fun. ‘Entertainment is not the byproduct of progress; rather, progress is a byproduct of entertainment.’ Read free on my Substack: open.substack.com/pub/manujo…

The MOST obvious (but REALLY good) STARTUP ideas right now: 1. Zestimate for company data (what your data is worth to an AI lab) 2. Google Analytics for agents (see which agents visit your site and what they want) 3. Y Combinator for 1 person companies (back solo founders running a team of agents) 4. Okta for agents (who each agent is and what it's allowed to touch) 5. Marie Kondo for your company's data (clean it up so agents can use it) 6. FICO for agents (a trust score before an agent can spend money) 7. Geico for agents (insurance for when an agent makes an expensive mistake) 8. Datadog for agents (see every step your agents took) 9. Twilio for agents (phone numbers and texting for agents) 10. Upwork for agents (hire an agent for a job instead of a freelancer) 11. ESPN for AI (every model launch covered like a big game). 12. Shutterstock for robot training videos (get paid to film yourself doing chores) 13. Credit Karma for what AI knows about you (see it, fix it, delete it) 14. Norton for AI scams (protect your parents from fake voices and emails) 15. PayPal Buyer Protection for agent purchases (fixes it when your agent buys the wrong thing) 16. Geek Squad for AI (set up personal agents for families and small businesses) 17. Dell for private AI (AI in a box for firms that won't use the cloud) 18. Carfax for used GPUs (a health report before you buy secondhand) 19. Airbnb for idle GPUs (rent out computing power you're not using) 20. Rotten Tomatoes for AI models (real reviews instead of benchmarks) 21. G2 for skills (find the best skills for your agent) 22. Dropbox for your AI memory (take what your agent knows about you to any agent) 23. Canva for physical products (design it with AI and get it made) 24. ADT for your personal agent (alerts when your agent does something it shouldn't) 25. Hertz for robots (rent one for a move, a deep clean or an event) 26. Harvard Business School for internet businesses (a real education in building online) 27. Workday for agents (onboard, manage and offboard your digital workers) 28. Getty Images for your face and voice (license your likeness to AI safely) 29. Meta Muse for older adults (and other high LTV niche) 30. Google Ads for agents (pay to be what the agent recommends) 31. Loom for agents (a walkthrough of everything your agent did) 32. Plaid for agents (approved access to banks, airlines and stores) 33. Jiffy Lube for vibe coded apps (quick fixes when your AI built app breaks) 34. Ancestry for datasets (where your training data came from) 35. The organic label for human-made content (proof a person made it) 36. Strava for builders (track what you ship every week) 37. Honey that haggles for you (your agent negotiates the price) 38. SEM Rush for personal agent platforms (like Muse etc) 39. Frequent flyer miles for agents (loyalty programs built for agents)

So @Penn is where it all started for me, and I am so grateful. It's where I met the friends I'd go on to co-found @EniacVC with. It's where I first figured out that I wanted to build things. And today, I got to go back and lecture hundreds of Penn engineers for the next generation of builders. A few things stuck with me: The ambition is off the charts. Half the questions weren't "should I start a company?" but "I already started one, what do I do next?" They're AI-native in a way we never were. They don't treat AI as a tool to bolt on. It's just how they think about solving problems. The best ones already have founder-market fit. They're not chasing trends. They're working on problems they've lived. That's what we call a Human Unicorn: someone doing their life's work. I went in to teach. I came out more optimistic about what's coming than I've been in a long time. Thank you to epic Profs Babin and Cassel for having me, and to every student who stayed after to pitch me in the hallway. I meant it when I said send we are here to be there mentors.. for life. – at Philadelphia, PA

1/x October is #ADHDAwarenessMonth. Kirby Hansen-McNulty, CEO and founder of @CalibrateADHD, joins me Thursday for Ep. 59 of #ShiningLightOnShadows, “Understanding and Living With ADHD; AI as a Tool for Managing ADHD.” Kirby and I will talk about self-awareness, self-support, burnout and why so many people wait until things reach a crisis before seeking help. I’ll also share how I’ve been using #ChatGPT as one tool to help manage my work with #ADHD. Links / Details: neilparekh.org/post/ep-59-un… 📅 Thursday, Oct. 22 🕖 7pm ET / 6pm CT / 4pm PT My co-host @Dawner100 will be attending “Survivor Like Me: 100 Survivor Takeover,” that night. 2/x Kirby Hansen-McNulty from @CalibrateADHD and I each wrote blog posts for this episode. Kirby: “The ADHD ‘Would Be Nice’ List: Why Self-Care Should Come First” She writes about the #ADHD “would be nice” list, the things we know could help us but continually push behind whatever feels more urgent. That can include getting evaluated, understanding a diagnosis, finding support or simply taking time to understand how ADHD shows up in our lives and building supports that work with our brains rather than against them. 🔗 neilparekh.org/post/kirby-ha… My Blog Post: “AI as a Tool for Managing ADHD.” I write about what I’ve learned since being diagnosed, and how #ChatGPT has become one tool I use to put those lessons into practice. I use it for planning, prioritization, time management and external memory. It has also helped me make work feel more finite and, sometimes, recognize when I’ve done enough. I also write about its limitations. ChatGPT can make mistakes, misunderstand context and become another task in itself. The point is not that ChatGPT is managing my ADHD for me. I’m adapting a tool to support the ways I’m learning to manage ADHD myself. 🔗 neilparekh.org/post/ai-as-a-… Kirby will be my guest on Ep. 59 of #ShiningLightOnShadows, “Understanding and Living With ADHD; AI as a Tool for Managing ADHD.” Links / Details: neilparekh.org/post/ep-59-un… 📅 Thursday, Oct. 22 🕖 7pm ET / 6pm CT / 4pm PT #ADHDAwarenessMonth #MentalHealth
