Could you get a free NHS flu vaccine this winter? πŸ’‰πŸ›‘οΈ Maybe you're pregnant, work on the frontline in health or social care, or are aged 65 or over. Whatever eligible group you fall into, you're entitled to extra protection against the serious illness that flu can cause.

Today marks 60 years since the #Aberfan disaster, a tragedy that changed the lives of so many people and left a lasting mark on the community and on Wales. On 21 October 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed onto Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes. 144 people lost their lives, including 116 children. Behind those numbers were families, friends, classmates and neighbours whose lives were changed in an instant. The loss was felt far beyond Aberfan, but it was the people of the village and surrounding communities who had to live with its consequences every day. I remember as a young child, travelling up to Aberfan, as my father owned a property there. Even then, I remember being aware of how deeply the disaster had affected the community. The sadness was still there in the stories people told and in the way Aberfan was remembered. It was a preventable tragedy, and it should never have happened. I think too of my good friend and mentor, Jeff Edwards OBE OStJ DL, who survived the disaster as a child. Jeff and others who lived through that day have gone on to become leaders in their community. Through their strength, service and willingness to share their experiences, they have helped keep the memory of Aberfan alive and ensure that those who died are not forgotten. Today, my thoughts are with everyone who lost loved ones, the survivors, the rescuers and all those whose lives were changed by the disaster. We remember the people of Aberfan, and we must continue to listen to their stories.
β€œI had a right leg in the radiator and a dead girl on my shoulder” Jeff Edwards recounts his experience of the Aberfan disaster, which killed 144 people, including 116 children, 60 years ago. #Newsnight

At 9:15am today, Wales will fall silent to remember those who were taken from us in the Aberfan disaster. 60 years may have passed, but we will never forget them.

Know your units, know your limits. There isn’t a completely safe amount of alcohol you can drink, but you are at lower risk of harm if you drink 14 units or less a week. Tracking your units helps you stay in control. #AlcoholAwarenessWeek

I recently had the honour of being installed as Lower Warden of the Worshipful Company of Educators at our Annual Assembly held at the historic Barber-Surgeons' Hall in the City of London. Standing before the Master, fellow Wardens, Clerk, Liverymen and Freemen to read my Declaration of Office and formally commit myself to serving the Company over the coming year, was a deeply special moment, one I will cherish for many years to come. I am incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me and for the immense support I have received throughout my journey with the Company. Following the formal proceedings, on what was a beautifully warm afternoon and evening, we were joined by guests on the terrace and in the gardens, set against the remarkable backdrop of the remains of the original Roman London Wall, a fitting reminder of the deep history and traditions that continue to shape the City today. We then moved into the magnificent Great Hall, dominated by the famous Holbein painting of King Henry VIII uniting the Barbers and Surgeons Companies in 1541, a powerful symbol of heritage, learning and professional excellence. Our guest speaker, the Rt Hon Ruth Kelly, spoke thoughtfully about critical thinking and the importance of human connection in an age increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. Her reflections were timely and thought-provoking. I want to place on record my sincere thanks to those who have supported and encouraged me since my admission into the Company, especially our Gallant and Learned Clerk, many Past Masters, and fellow members whose guidance, mentorship and friendship have helped shape this journey. Without their belief and encouragement, this milestone would not have been possible. I also want to pay tribute to both the outgoing Renter Warden, who has had a fantastic few years and now joins the Court. And our Immediate Past Master, who has had an exceptional and demanding year of service. He has led from the front with dedication, energy and vision, and leaves a strong foundation for us to build upon. I now look forward to a busy and purposeful year supporting our new Master, particularly as he explores the important theme of faith and education, two subjects that continue to shape character, values and society itself. Education remains one of the greatest tools we have to transform lives, break barriers and create opportunity. In every generation, it gives people the chance not only to learn, but to think, question, grow and contribute. Its importance has never been greater.
