A rare barbastelle bat has been confirmed in Jersey for the first time, taking the island's total number of recorded bat species to 19. 💚
The animal was discovered during licensed surveys near Rozel and fitted with a Bluetooth tracking tag to reveal where it travels.
Anika Binet, a postgraduate researcher at the University of Sussex, discovered the bat and said she hoped to find out whether it remained in Jersey or moved between the Channel Islands and France.
She said finding the bat was "incredibly exciting" as there had been possible sightings of the species reported on the island since 2024.

Researchers from Thailand's Royal Forest Department have recorded the Laotian leaf-nosed bat (Hipposideros rotalis) in Thailand for the first time, marking a new addition to the country's known mammal species.
The discovery was made during wildlife surveys earlier this year at Hin Sam Wan (Three Whale Rock) Recreational Forest in Bueng Kan province, a protected forest area in northeastern Thailand known for its rich biodiversity. After examining the bat's physical characteristics and consulting specialists, researchers confirmed it as Hipposideros rotalis, a species previously known only from neighbouring Laos.
The finding expands the known range of the species and highlights the ecological connectivity of forests across the Thai-Lao border. The insect-eating bat is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, although relatively little is known about its biology.
Researchers said the discovery underscores the importance of continued biodiversity surveys, noting that Thailand's forests may still hold previously unrecorded species and valuable scientific information for conservation efforts. #ThailandNews – at Pathum Wan, Thailand

A team of Indian and Hungarian researchers has recorded two bat species in India for the first time during biodiversity surveys in Mizoram, taking the country's known bat diversity to at least 138 species.
The study, led by researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Shillong, in collaboration with scientists from other Indian institutions and the Hungarian Natural History Museum, documented the first-ever occurrence of the Indo-Chinese thick-thumbed bat (Glischropus bucephalus) and the Indo-Chinese mouse-eared bat (Myotis indochinensis) in India.
The discoveries were made during extensive field surveys conducted across Mizoram between 2023 and 2025.

An amazing night at Firevolt Festival.
Just a joyous celebration of wonderfulness, 8th time we’ve seen them this year and the band just keeps getting better, even with a stand in for Jon (@ChrisCatalyst was great). @GingerWildheart
Very pleased to see a conviction and fine for this case where my bat group and I co-ordinated the rescue, with 37 of the 83 bats delivered to us ultimately surviving and being released near the site.

‘Ignoramus Stupidatus’, the new tune from my new cartoon-metal-weirdness project Radio Everything is here.
It features a big dumb riff and a very large chorus. And quite a lot of trumpets.
Watch it here, and do please share it around if you are into it:

Seems appropriate to rescue a hedgehog out on the road during the day on the way to @TheWildhearts gig after @GingerWildheart recent hedgehog exploits. Dropped off at a vets in Stirling for triage before it heads to the SSPCA rescue centre.
Superb night at a wonderful venue in Trowbridge. Thanks @GingerWildheart

Extreme temperatures resulted in deaths in camps across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Grey-headed flying foxes, listed as vulnerable under federal environment laws, were the most affected.

Happy birthday @GingerWildheart
Great to chat with you, Taylor, Dunc, Charles and Carol after tonight’s brilliant gig.
This band continues to give us so much joy.
Superb start to the @TheWildhearts tour. Great set list, loads of energy with songs I’ve been waiting a long time to hear or hear again, almost as good as the new one which lived up to expectations. Brilliant. Looking forward to Preston+Bradford+Glasgow. @GingerWildheart
