Observations and thoughts on the Streatham Wells Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) which began its trial on 23 Oct 2023. Posts by @angusjfrench.

Streatham Wells
Joined October 2023
Pre LTN estimated hourly traffic flows on weekdays from 4PM to 7PM. Note the purple sections within the LTN and on boundary roads. I have counted sometimes 300+ motor vehicles going through what was the Valley Road roundabout (at the jnct with Gleneldon Rd) in a 15-minute period.

So we now have two consecutive nights of overnight closures of Streatham Hill for which @TfL and their contractors Conway have given no advance notice to local residents, and for which the diversion notices to bus operators were late and/or incomplete. networkmanagementcc.blogspot…
Closing in one direction wasn't enough disruption for Streatham Hill so TfL have upped it to closing both ways.

This is a start but there's so much more that could be said. LTNs impact not only the LTN area and LTN boundary roads but also the roads *beyond* boundary roads - in terms of journey times (including for buses), distances travelled and pollution impacts...
I recently wrote to the council leader, calling for resident exemption permits for LTNs. Whilst traffic calming measures like LTNs are vital to tackle air pollution, they must be implemented in the most effective way. Good to hear they will keep this option under consideration.

... the impacts need to be very carefully measured and proper regard needs to be had for the feedback of local residents *and* local businesses and services.

From the Hackney Green Party manifesto (hackneygreens.org.uk/manifes…). Consideration could also be given to: - allowing local residents to pass through LTN filters; and - operating LTNs only outside peak traffic hours. How about the Lambeth Green Party commit to something like this?

Will the account be opened up to permit replies to posts?
Until Thursday 7th May this account will partly be used to promote candidates in the @lambeth_council local elections. Promoted by David Oxley on behalf of Danny Adilypour, Dominic Armstrong and Sarah Cole, all at 13 Ashfield Court, London, SW9 9BB.

For the local elections in May PollCheck is currently forecasting that the Greens will win 39 seats and take control of Lambeth Council: pollcheck.co.uk/locals-2026#…. Jonathan Bartley is apparently standing in Clapham Town. It would be great to know Lambeth Green's policies on LTNs.

It would be great if the Greens had a policy on LTNs which recognised that traffic is displaced - it doesn't all disappear - and can result in greater pollution and congestion outside an LTN. Displacement impacts need to be carefully measured. Residents, businesses and services..

Can we have clear statements from the political groups standing for election in Lambeth in May on their *borough-wide* position on LTNs and CPZs? It's no good having ward candidates saying they are against LTNs/CPZs when, across the borough, the policy is to support the same.

Today #255 bus services scheduled to run from Balham to Mitcham starting at 16:23, 16:36, 16:50, 17:04 and 17:40 apparently: - didn't run; - took 17 minutes to travel the two stops from Thornton Av to Streatham Hill Station; - didn't run; - took 16 minutes; and - took 17 minutes.

Stats from bustimes.org and originally from TfL, for example: bustimes.org/services/255-po…. I think there's an issue here. Congestion is often bad on Sternhold and Thornton Avs, particularly on Fridays. Would be interested in the thoughts of @streathamaction and @tfl.

Hello @instreatham, just to say the link in your post below looks incorrect and gives an error message. Perhaps tfl.gov.uk/travel-informatio… was intended?

There will be bus stop relocations, side road closures, temporary crossings, pedestrian & cycle diversions, & some parking suspensions. Work on the new road layout is due to be completed in spring 2027. More project details can be seen here: tfl.gov.uk/.../improvements.… 5/6

It's 3:25PM on a Friday and traffic along Sternhold and Thornton Avenues towards Streatham High Road is already, according to Google Maps, backing up to Criffel Avenue. Doesn't auger well for rush hour journey times including for #50 and #255 buses. #A23StreathamHillWorks

Today a #255 bus service took 31 minutes - against a scheduled 4 minutes - to travel the two stops from Thornton Road to Streatham Hill Station. The service was curtailed at Norbury (and then turned around to go back to Balham). #A23StreathamHillWorks

The #255 bus services which immediately followed took, respectively, 32, 29 and 24 minutes to travel between the same two stops.

Is this relevant to Streatham? (Direct replies aren't allowed for some reason.)
After consultation @TfL has announced it is to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on the A214 Trinity Road and Tooting Bec Rd. haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/lower…
