Interesting: The government will remove the two-year rule so that beneficiaries will no longer be taxable solely because tax free pension and lump sum death benefits are paid more than two years after the member’s death. From 28 October 2026. #Budget2026

One of the worst policy decisions I've seen. Ill-thought-out, overcomplicated, bound to cost more than expected, reinforces the myth that state pension is tax-free when it's always been taxable income. Reversing this decision will be a nightmare - as with the triple lock.
Pensioners with income up to the value of the full new state pension (to be £13,040 from April 2027) will not pay tax. Mechanism not stated, I suspect there will be an effective increased pensioner allowance with a clawback for income above that. More when I know more.

The Chancellor has just announced a 2% increase to rental income, is that a restatement of the existing measure from April 2027, or an additional increase taking the rates to 24%, 44% and 49%? #Budget2026

All changes to pensions are designed to hit private not public pensions. And, yes, that is depressingly unfair. But you know, votes to hang on to and all that.

And a council tax surcharge.
The design looks *terrible*. Slabs/thresholds which will distort the market
Salary-sacrificed pension contributions above an annual £2,000 threshold will no longer be exempt from national insurance contributions from April 2029. The lower earners hit the hardest? #Budget2026 #Budget2025
New high value council tax surcharge targeting properties over £2m. Four price bands with the surcharge rising from £2,500 for a property valued in the lowest £2 million to £2.5 million band, to £7,500 for a property valued in the highest band of £5 million or more. Frm Guardian

A link to our Economic and fiscal outlook document went live on our website too early this morning. It has been removed.
We apologise for this technical error and have initiated an investigation into how this happened.
We will be reporting to our Oversight Board, the Treasury, and the Commons Treasury Committee on how this happened, and we will make sure this does not happen again.
Our Economic and fiscal outlook and supporting documents will be released when the Chancellor has finished her speech.
What will happen to my pension if salary sacrifice is capped in the Budget? Steve Webb replies.
Seems to be saying its not too bad for employees as only 2% loss on income over £50k. But what about the people earning under £50k? #Budget2026 #Budget2025
