Here are my own thoughts on this matter, since I've posted it in pieces elsewhere:
Harry doesn't get to make mistakes very often. Sure, he wrongly accuses Snape in the first book, because Snape is a dick. He blames Malfoy for the events of the second, for similar reasons. But it all works out in the end, because dead ends are just part of the mystery.
Maybe that's just the nature of being the titular hero, or of the type of story that JK wrote early on, but he's never really punished for leaping before he looks. Everything is just brushed aside with a light detention at worst, and another 50 points to Gryffindor if he managed to save the school this year.
Sectum Sempra is his first real fuck-up with consequences. For whatever reason, Harry never thought to take his textbook out behind Hagrid's hut and fire off a few test spells. He just reached straight for the killing curse, not realizing that it was on the level of Avada Kedavra. It's the equivalent of a teenaged boy finding a loaded gun and using it to play laser tag because he'd only ever seen Cowboys and Indians fall over after being shot. 𝑂ℎ 𝑠ℎ𝑖𝑡 doesn't begin to cover it.
So we rewrite it, yeah? Easy enough, we're already rewriting everything from Goblet of Fire onward to fit Malfoid neatly into the narrative. We can have our story as fluffy and romantical as we want, and nobody can say otherwise.
It's fine.
Just 2 things.
Number 1, you're removing the deepest plunge of the roller coaster. You've been to the summit, at the Yule Ball, and during whatever romantic shenanigans you want to come up with during the following ~4-6 months leading up to the graveyard and Cedric's death. But a proper enemy/rivals-to-lovers story needs a plunge. You can't just started at the bottom in their first year and work your way up, that's -- forgive me -- dreadfully boring. That's a checklist, not a story. Dracaena deserves better, which means she deserves her own character growth. The Sectum Sempara scene gives it to the both of them, and gives them a good point to rebuild from before the end of the story so that it's not just a rushed mess in the final 2 chapters.
Number 2, and nearly just as important; you're not just changing that one scene. You'd also be changing the context of a later scene, after Dumbledore falls, and Harry again attempts to use the curse on Snape. Canonically this is his second time attempting it, and now he knows exactly what it does. Harry is ready to 𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑒 a Hogwarts teacher for what he sees as the ultimate betrayal, and for the first time in his life he's shooting with the intent to kill.
There's nothing wrong with wanting a more light-hearted approach to the story. The "Lumos/Lumos" animation I reposted earlier is a wonderful example of this. But if you do remove it from the bathroom scene, just be aware that you're changing far more than a simple lover's quarrel in the girl's toilets. You're taking away a very strong point of agency and growth from two characters that could really use a kick in the teeth to get them back on the right track.
Malfoid’s scars tell their story. Pro-sectumsempra. #Malfoid

Absolutely peak cinema but I can't help but find it ridiculously funny that people are more excited for this than the official show coming out 🤣
Sectumsempra must happen because their love can survive it. They bottom out with it. Harry, in disbelief that he used an unknown spell on Draconia. And Draconia realizing that Harry might actually hate her, which pushes her further to the death eaters.

I don't think people are being honest with themselves with the whole SectumSempra thing...
Making the argument "But what if Harry practiced or learned what the spell did beforehand", or arguing that they should be lovers at that point, or arguing that Malfoid's actions wouldn't have an impact on Harry's choice of use because she's a girl and a girl he cares about....
You're all just looking for reasons and excuses not to put it in because you prefer him not to hurt the one he loves.
You are fabricating reasons to avoid having it, justifying that fabrication with "Its fanfiction, we can do what we want."
You can. Absolutely, you can. You can also ruin a story by not adhering to the needs of the narrative, or diminish it from what it could be.
Kind of like making Malfoid male did, just because Jo wanted to distance her schoolyard bully from herself. Kind of like how she denied Draco's redemption out of spite for her own childhood bully.
You can certainly do that, and you'd be following your personal impulse in doing so. And in doing so, would rob the story of one of its most pivotal, weighty, emotional moments.
And one of the moments which most people universally agreed with as being NECESSARY for their romantic climax.
So yes. You can write that, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop you. Go right ahead.

The missing pieces of the puzzle on sectumsempra and #Malfoid
I purposefully kept my first post on it short for accessibility purposes. I'll elaborate here:
The sectumsempra scene must happen and it is far more important than even the people who support the scene realise.
1. Harry lacked the understanding of what he was actually wielding:
@BewareOfWombat said it very well in his reply to my original post on this topic. The entire audience has been conditioned to think that only the unforgivable spells are deadly up to that point.
On top of that, I replied saying that throughout the book, Harry was using someone else's knowledge. He cheated his way through the potions class and went down a dangerous path using someone else's work without understanding it. He did all this long before he cast that spell.
He is still a stupid child, he hasn't grown up into a man yet. After cheating his way through that book, not understanding the powers he's wielding, he went in there thinking that sectumsempra was not capable of killing someone. A mistake he would regret instantly.
2. The elephant in the bathroom no one seems to have noticed, not even those who support keeping sectumsempra in:
We are currently coming to the end of 2026, and I can say (sadly) with a lot of confidence, that the relations between men and women overall have never been worse.
We are at a point in time where there is so much mistrust between the sexes and I am not going to try to lecture anyone or try to play a blame game on this. I just want to acknowledge, this is where we are now.
It strikes me as being very similar to the way Harry and Malfoid are driven apart. They were getting close, there was friendship forming and the potential for love and everything that comes with it... they were on their way.
Then Voldemort returned and the resulting aftermath of that nightmare tore them apart. Instead of coming together, the two are forced to turn on each other by outside forces manipulating them into a confrontation neither can get out of... it's sounding all too familiar with how things are in the real world.
This scene has to happen because it is an allegory of what is happening out there. This scene has to happen because we've already agreed how it's going to end. Harry and Malfoid are going to endure this nightmare and come out the other side.
It needs to happen because we, out here in the real world, need to BELIEVE we can do the same. That we as men and women can overcome this trial we're in and come out the other side hand-in-hand.
We MUST believe we can achieve that because if we think that sectumsempra is too great to overcome, then it's a sign we believe that the rift between the sexes we see in real life is also something too great to overcome.
I don't want that to be the belief people have. We yearn for a reason. Let sectumsempra and the overcoming of that darkest moment between a man and a woman be the light that shines our way to that future we yearn for.
3. The payoff to enduring and overcoming the lowest point in Harry and Malfoid's relationship:
THIS is where it gets even better. Like with any good piece of classical literature, the trial overcome needs to have a reward worthy of that trial. This is something that popped into my head when replying to @kasmosd1 in that first thread about this topic.
When Snape is healing Malfoid, he takes special care to make sure her organs are fully repaired, meaning that she will have superficial scars remaining on her skin, but her internal organs are pristine.
In fact, Snape did something better without realising it, he managed to strengthen Malfoid's internal organs... let's call it an unintentional parting gift he ends up giving to Harry and Malfoid.
All of us conjured up a unified vision of Malfoid's ending with Harry. They would get married and they would have children. We then agreed, not just a couple of children, not just three, not five... no... they would have MANY children... enough to "make the Weasleys look infertile."
I propose that Snape healing Malfoid's internal organs is how this is achieved. Childbirth isn't easy, having many, MANY children is even more difficult. Women certainly don't need me to tell them that.
In this storybook we're writing, let our heroes have the reward they deserve, a reward of children and a happy home filled with many of them.
Let it be the man who yearned be the one to give them that gift. Let it be their darkest moment needing to happen be the catalyst for their greatest achievement.
Let their children be gifts they cherish for the rest of their lives and bring them closer together.
Sectumsempra MUST happen.

On sectumsempra and #Malfoid
I'll keep it short:
Harry uses it without knowing what it does. Instantly regrets it, holds Malfoid in his arms, cries. Snape rushes in and forcing him to leave.
After Dumbedore's death, uses it on Snape, knowing what it does.
It works EVEN better.

Let me make this dead simple for some people...
If Love cannot in the end overcome casting SectumSempra on Malfoid... then it certainly won't defeat the embodiment of evil that is Voldemort.
You guys have a very shallow view of love if you think it cannot overcome the SectumSempra situation between the two of them, and are probably projecting.

Cute af. Peak fiction. Cancel the HBO show.

Because a certain kind of man believes that not getting everything he wants from women is oppression. This applies both to incels and to the type of trans-identified man who insists that speech, laws and physical spaces should be reconfigured around his self-image.

REVIVE Malfoid right now and give her the happiest ending. This fan comic does it so well I can't come to hate it. But it's too much angst for the heart

Cal HC Tosh Lupoi on ignoring “outside noise” entering Saturday night’s game vs. Wake Forest:
“I'm just blessed to have a dominator's mindset to not listen to any of you guys.” #Respect 😂
They better get out ahead of this. They said if we don’t get it together in two years, we’re done.

Where is Lyons. He spent the offseason telling us how good a job he did finally creating alignment top down and giving Ron the keys. Turns out he can’t drive.

Stanford having a better record than Cal at this point is a bad look for the program considering the difference in investments and preseason trajectory of the programs. Reminder that vibes are good but nothing matters until you spot the ball and play the actual games.

Ok, gotta say, watching the game on CW is eye opening. Have taken for granted the level of professionalism we get on ESPN. CW production values, announcers and commentators are simply bush league. wow
