Evening viewing recommendation? On the Criterion Channel, watch THE CAT O' NINE TAILS (1971) in our Dario Argento collection! bit.ly/4jEqpD4 Argento’s sophomore feature—the second entry in his so-called Animal Trilogy—finds the filmmaker further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller.

With the late, great Oliver Reed currently wowing 2026 audiences all over again with his incredible performance in the restored version of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, I wanted to share this amazing clip of him from 1985. The rather low-res clip comes from ‘In at the Deep End’, a BBC series in which presenter Paul Heiney tries his hands at a profession he had zero experience in. For this episode, Heiney was preparing for an acting role opposite Michael Caine in ‘Water’ and went to Oliver Reed for some pointers on how to play a villain. Please enjoy what happens next.

there's a part in The Devils where Oliver Reed says "I could never be Satan's boy" and I can't stop thinking about it

More than 30 years ago, Mark Kermode promised Ken Russell that he would find the footage that censors deleted in 1971 from THE DEVILS. On Saturday night, KEN RUSSELL’S THE DEVILS — the uncensored, restored director’s cut — premiered for the first time ever in the US.

Farran's musings on Maugham
For Criterion Current, I wrote about the 1948–1951 trilogy of anthology movies based on Somerset Maugham short stories: QUARTET, TRIO and ENCORE. All three are @criterionchannl, and I enjoyed them so much I spent all summer reading Maugham stories. criterion.com/current/posts/…
