More than 75% of NYC's space is devoted to driving and free storage for cars — even though a minority of New Yorkers own a car, fewer than 25% drive to work, and the vast majority of us walk, bike, and take transit.
Is this the best use of our streets? We say no.

More great new data points: (1) between 2020 and 2023, 130 million electric bikes will be sold worldwide – making them the world’s best-selling electric vehicle; and (2) in Europe, e-bike sales will surpass the sales of all cars — not just electric cars — later this decade.
If they had used our automated parking system, instead of a narrow, too-tall garage on a small triangle of land, it would cost a fraction of this amount.
Replying to @Union_Tpke
This one is honestly the most horrifying. Work on some station repairs and a new PARKING GARAGE at Stamford increased from $105.3M to $268.3M. This doesn't improve service!!! @diceo @capntransit

The best time to have read Walkable City was 10 years ago. The second-best time is today.
Honored to pen the foreword for this important work's 10th anniversary edition.

great piece, worth a read.
The way we move and how our streets are designed has a major negative impact on public health. Re-prioritising our streets and reallocating road space to walking and cycling is essential to a healthier population. It's time for change #BikeIsBest theguardian.com/business/202…
Huge news: Cambridge U researchers have discovered an inexpensive alloy that makes very powerful magnets without the "rare earth" metals that are so expensive - and which are currently controlled by China.

If it's already happened in Des Moines, it will be happening everywhere soon . . . as it should!
There's something for everyone:
Large linear synchronous motors: trucks, vans, cars
Medium linear synchronous motors: scooters, wagons

We have to think beyond dumb, hulking parking garages, and provide the kinds of transportation (and storage) infrastructure that actually meets people's needs. #automatedstorage #ebikes
Like cycling itself, this trend will slowly spread worldwide - even to the US!
differently-sized vehicles are definitely coming - and will definitely need differently-sized garages!
This piece by @DavidZipper is 1 of the best articles I have read on e-mobility lately. I met with several golf cart producers in the US a few weeks ago who confirmed this trend. In southern US golf carts are taking over (to some extent from walking).

Sadly, quite true. Automated parking makes our urban spaces better, but they're not a total solution.
again, wow!
There have been 0 deaths on #Paris's bike paths so far in 2022.
The busiest of them now count 15,000+ riders a day.
Usage is up 17-30% over last year.
So successful city is now considering widening existing paths.

As a provider of car parking systems, we agree!
Cycle lanes are good for drivers and we need more of them, says the AA telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/10…
wow
WATCH: ordinary residents in #Oxford are now acting as 'human bollards' to protect cyclists, pedestrians and children from drivers who flout the rules, and vandals who have destroyed the physical bollards. Extraordinary, really.

The public are often ahead of policy makers on solutions for the challenges we face, including transport. Our latest research showed that half the population see electric bikes as an ideal replacement for a car. We now need policy makers to enable this: bikebiz.com/half-of-brits-be…
