Barring Erdogan, it is quite extraordinary how a former al-Qaeda leader, has managed to do what no Islamist movement or leader has achieved. He has managed to go 'straight'. Whatever method he has used, he's got the West to accept him as a partner, something which they have not done with the Islamic State, the Taliban, the Muslim Brotherhood even Ennahda. That has to rank as a major achievement for anyone who studies Islamist movements.
“Last year I mentioned that Syria has returned. Today, I say that Syria is rising.” Ahmed al-Sharaa returned to the UN with Syria’s diplomatic standing transformed. Now comes the harder task: turning international acceptance into progress at home. Ananya Natchukuri @nat28453 writes for @SyriaDirect : syriadirect.org/syria-is-ris…

Pakistan could help train Syria’s new military, drawing on a relationship stretching back decades. But Islamabad is also watching Syria’s Islamist landscape carefully, wary of what developments in Damascus could mean for jihadist movements closer to home.
