Ken Griffin explains why the rise of passive investing only works as long as active managers keep doing the research that sets prices
“So what’s very interesting is the rise of passive investing plays to the realization that markets are either efficient or semi-efficient."
"And it’s a way for investors to have low-cost exposure to either broad indices, to the world as a whole, or to specific sectors without having to pay the fees of active management."
"It’s been revolutionary for the world, this embracing of passive investing. But passive investing only works if there’s a meaningful community of people involved in fundamental research who are helping to set the pricing of securities."
"So passive investing requires the existence of capable, successful, and competitive traditional asset managers for the theory that underlies passive investing to actually play out, to actually manifest itself."
"So the rise of short-term investors helps to ensure that markets are efficient with respect to news that’s rapidly evolving. But we should really try to make sure that we take every step possible to make it that traditional asset managers have the ability to have prosperous and successful firms because they are so critical in the price discovery process that passive investing depends upon.”

I'll get a lot of flack for this (as I did for my call on European banks 4 years ago), but the European auto sector is idiotically cheap.
Strong balance sheets, positive catalysts on politics, trade protection, enviro policy rollbacks, and (soon) lower interest rates coming.

Noelle Acheson says passive investing will eventually kill US capital markets, with AI rotation holding off a correction for now
"I've been banging the drum about this for years, that passive investing is going to kill the US capital market eventually, because the big funds are doing very well. The index is doing very well. So everyone's feeling very good. So we're going to put more money into an index fund."
"That just funnels money up to the big or the top performers, and it is sort of not the purpose of capital markets to just pick the top performers. You're supposed to pick ones that align with what you think is coming, etc., etc."
"The funneling up does, by its very nature, concentrate returns, and that itself, that lack of breadth, could lead to some very nasty drops. It could also, again, taking the other side here, it could also earn some resilience."
"I've been expecting a correction based on lack of breadth for a while, and I've been wrong, because what I didn't see coming was the swift rotation from the Mag 7 into the chips, into those others that are now going to benefit from AI, into logistics, etc."
"There's a swift rotation, which is not necessarily the index funds. That is the stock pickers. So you have sectors, subsectors picking up the baton. There isn't a widespread panic just yet, largely because of the potential that is still being digested from the new technology."
