Sorry for the late reply. Please note my husband protected me and our children from running afoul of immigration law by filing his paperwork appropriately. There are two forms of Idolatry:
Idolatry for Jews (more stringent)
Idolatry for Gentiles (more lenient)
To become a Christian would be considered Idolatry for a Jew because that goes against basic beliefs about God in the Jewish faith (he has no body etc.)
For a Gentile however, since they still believe in the same one god it is not considered Idolatry. (While there are some most notably Maimonides that says that it is idolatry, the general consensus is that it is not and that is how we rule nowadays)
