It was conservatives that sold out Canada. It will always be conservatives who sell out Canada. Conservatives are me-me people and they are generally all about greed. It's never enough and plenty of punching down and blaming the poorest for being poor.

Here is some reading material. Perhaps you weren’t around when we had a party with the same platform the Conservatives have. People have forgotten, or never knew, what BC looked like the last time a government ran on the platform the Conservatives are running on now. Exact same scenario, Conservative take over from NDP. I think it’s worth remembering before you vote. In fall 2001, BC gave Gordon Campbell a massive majority, and he used it to dismantle much of what the NDP had built. This week the Conservatives’ own campaign material pointed to Campbell’s 2001 approach as their model. So here’s what that looked like. To pay for a 25% income tax cut, the 2002 budget cut every ministry outside health and education by an average of 25% over three years. HEALTH CARE • Bill 29 tore up the Hospital Employees’ Union contract, leading to the layoff of more than 8,000 health workers, mostly women. Many jobs were contracted out at lower wages. The Supreme Court of Canada later struck down key parts of the law as unconstitutional. • MSP premiums went up 50% overnight. • Hospitals were closed or downsized across the province, including Summerland and St. Mary’s in New Westminster. HOUSING • The new Residential Tenancy Act dropped the requirement for landlords to justify rent increases with actual costs, and later locked in automatic yearly increases of inflation plus 2%. CHILDREN, YOUTH & EDUCATION • Scrapped the NDP’s plan for universal $14/day child care, then cancelled the $7/day before- and after-school care program. • Stripped class size and composition limits from teachers’ contracts. The BCTF says more than 3,500 teaching positions were lost. The courts later ruled that law unconstitutional too. • Ended the tuition freeze. Tuition jumped 40% one year and 35% the next, and roughly doubled within a few years. Student grants were eliminated entirely by 2004. • Created a $6/hr “training wage” for new workers’ first 500 hours and froze the minimum wage at $8 for nearly a decade. WOMEN • Cut 100% of core funding for all 37 women’s centres in BC. • Ended the pay equity program. • Eliminated the Ministry of Women’s Equality. VULNERABLE PEOPLE • Took away welfare earnings exemptions, so most people on assistance lost every dollar they earned. They also cut family shelter allowances and imposed a two-years-in-five time limit. • Cut legal aid funding by about 40%, gutting family law help that women relied on. • Abolished the BC Human Rights Commission. That’s just a taste of last time.
I’m deeply disappointed about this result. I’m worried about what it could mean for health care, women’s rights, LGBTQ+ people, education and Indigenous rights…I don’t believe every person who voted Conservative is hateful or unintelligent. People vote for different reasons. But a win doesn’t make a policy harmless, and we shouldn’t pretend the campaign promises… or the rhetoric surrounding them… don’t matter. The Conservatives platform promises to repeal SOGI 123, an optional set of resources schools use to support students and address bullying related to sexual orientation and gender identity. It also promises to repeal DRIPA… B.C.’s framework for bringing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples into provincial law. Those choices put queer and trans students inclusion and reconciliation at risk. In 2024, Conservative candidate Marina Sapozhnikov used a racist slur to describe Indigenous people and made the baseless claim that 90% of Indigenous people use drugs. During this election, Conservative candidate Mike Hicks said First Nations needed to be “conquered.” Both incidents were condemned by Indigenous leaders. These words carry the weight of a violent colonial history, and political parties must be held accountable. On health care, the platform budgets $205 million a year at full cost for its promise to protect universal care and improve access. It also promises publicly funded treatment through another qualified provider if surgical wait benchmarks are exceeded. That raises real questions about how expanded care outside the public system could affect public staffing and access. What’s been hardest to watch is how hatred, scapegoating and misinformation have been pushed into the mainstream as “common sense.” Far right talking points have made it easier to treat our neighbours rights, identities and histories as threats. That should alarm all of us…I’m not saying every Conservative voter is stupid… you can’t judge one person’s intelligence by their vote, and research can’t explain why any one person voted the way they did. But studies do show a pattern, on average, between lower cognitive test scores and stronger socially conservative and authoritarian views. In a climate full of fearmongering and misinformation, critical thinking matters more than ever… question the talking points and check the facts… And to the Conservative supporters all over social media right now, gloating, mocking people and telling them to “cry harder”… your side won. If your first instinct in victory is to become even crueler, that says far more about your character than it does about anyone you defeated…People are genuinely afraid for their health care, their schools, their rights, their families and their safety. Treating that fear like entertainment isn’t strength, patriotism or political debate. It’s a complete failure of basic human decency…You got the result you wanted. Try showing some humility and humanity. Do better. Be better. An election victory is a mandate to govern… it is not permission to strip people of their dignity, erase their history or treat their rights as negotiable…Human rights are not privileges handed out by whichever political party happens to hold power. Indigenous history doesn’t disappear because the truth makes people uncomfortable. Queer and trans kids don’t become less deserving of safety because adults have turned their existence into a culture war. Women’s equality is not settled enough to be taken for granted, and health care and education should never be sacrificed to satisfy an ideology…To everyone who feels frightened, angry or abandoned by this result… you are not alone. There are still people who see you, stand beside you and will fight like hell for you. I refuse to accept cruelty as “common sense.” I refuse to let misinformation become truth simply because it was repeated loudly enough. You won an election. You did not win the right to decide whose humanity matters.

“Tahltan Nation congratulates Premier-elect @LDoerkson and the BC Conservative Party. We extend our appreciation to David Eby and his family for their service, and to the outgoing NDP government for its partnership with our Nation and the important progress achieved together. With approximately 70% of B.C.’s resource-rich Golden Triangle in Tahltan Territory, our Nation has a central role in the province’s economic future. We bring clear priorities: protecting our lands, waters, wildlife and sacred places while creating good-paying jobs and opportunities for our people and British Columbians. These goals go hand in hand. For our members, a change in government does not change who we are or what we stand for. Our strength comes from our people, our connection to our Territory and the generations who have upheld our rights. Tahltans have always been builders. We will approach this next chapter with confidence, purpose and a firm commitment to our collective future.”

Mining and natural resources are up to the provinces BC is all unceded lands no Treaties S35 is federal “a federal statute cannot dictate how a province handles its own strictly provincial jurisdictions, such as mining and natural resource management. Without DRIPA, there is no provincial statute enforcing UNDRIP compliance on B.C.” Now do you see why there are so many court cases in BC? Do you see why BC needed our own version called DRIPA? DRIPA was meant to stop all the court stuff, while upholding constitutionally protected rights of First Nations people in Canada Do you see why BC First Nations keep winning at the Canadian Supreme Court level ? Fighting Canadian rights to the highest Canadian courts…. Only results one way unless a constitutional amendment is done first.

“Why is repealing DRIPA a priority” “To stop the court cases” 😬 oh boy….
Sorry to say but the only certainty you now have with our First Nations is blockades and court cases that will drag on forever

Canada, understand this: 1) Doctors didn't build publicly funded healthcare. You did. 2) Most of you can't afford private, profiteer healthcare. 3) Doctors aren't going to fix this. We follow the money, just like you. 4) Only the public can save publicly funded healthcare.
Avi Lewis: "We must reverse the privatization of our healthcare system immediately."

Something tells me the all-for-one thing won't last in @Conservative_BC. They got at least one more OneBC defector in their ranks.
Congratulations to new B.C. Premier Caroline Elliott!!! 👏

Congratulations to @LDoerkson on becoming B.C.’s next premier. Serving this province has been the honour of a lifetime. I am so proud of the progress we've made and everything we've done together to make B.C. a stronger, fairer, more caring place. Thank you, British Columbia.

I remember doing health and wellness checks on colleague through the night and into the next weeks and will never forget! The worst day of an NDP government will always be better than the best day of a conservative government. I will never forget!

I remember my tuition fees rising by 300% in less than 3 years after the 2001 #BCelection. Student grants were severely cut. The Labour code was gutted. For 16 years some employed people had to work for less than minimum wage. Conservatives are cruel!
Someone asked me why I’ve worked so hard this election… this was my answer - I remember the 2nd round of cuts in 2003 like it was yesterday. I remember losing my job and then being the shop steward for my colleagues as Gordon Campbell fired us all…

All I ever hear is that somehow 9 years should be enough and somehow doable without spending $. With Covid, fires and floods, housing bubble, interest rate reversal, supply chain disruption, aging of the population, Trump tariffs and wars.
BC’s healthcare system is still suffering and playing catch-up from the last BC Lib (now BC Con) govt. It only takes one austere govt to destroy something for many years. Don’t push us even further back by voting for the BC Cons.

Politics is a tough job. I’m thankful people put themselves out there and run. Vote for change but the vile comments about Eby are not ok. We can all be better at constructive criticism. Democracy requires us to speak up. Debate. Civil society requires us well…to be civil.

Can everybody please wake the fuck up and realize that everywhere was worse to live than four years ago? And four years ago it was worse four years before that. Late stage capitalism sucks for regular people. We are at the end of the Monopoly game and we have no hotels.
60% of residents surveyed say Toronto is a worse place to live than four years ago

WATCH: SOGI 123 is a resource for teachers to help explain sexual and gender diversity in their classrooms. It’s been available to B.C.’s schools for a decade, but that could change depending on the province’s next leader. Marija Robinson reports. vancouver.citynews.ca/video/…

Conservatives arent excited for job creation, lower grocery and gas prices or cheaper homes. Their excitement is about repealing SOGI, Dripa and land acknowledgements and it says everything about the bad faith platform. We need change but not for those reasons
If the BC Conservatives win on Saturday, what are you most excited (or concerned) about in terms of what they can (or can't) do upon forming government?
