Localizers will blatantly disrespect the Japanese source material and act as though it's clever and funny. Esti Erhard of Atelier's Arland trilogy is a great example of turning a character into a complete joke by making her name a play on STD. Somehow, practices like this are considered a professional job in the world of localization, which is all that is needed to demonstrate the low standards of the industry and with how little respect Japanese media is treated via localizers. This should never be acceptable.

eMudhra's statement on its revoked intermediate CAs is damage control masquerading as an incident report. The private scalars behind eight NIST P-384 intermediate CA keys were all below 256: 4, 56, 66, 115, 155, 156, 230, and 237. These were supposed to be 384-bit elliptic-curve secrets. Instead, every single private key could be recovered by testing at most 255 candidate points. Blaming "AI-assisted tooling" for the discovery is absurd. On an elliptic curve, the public key is Q = d \cdot G. When the private scalar d is an integer between 1 and 255, recovering it is trivial: test candidate scalar multiples of the generator against the published public key. No exotic exploit. No neural networks. Scott Helme recovered all eight private keys on a standard laptop in under a second. Mozilla independently confirmed the result. eMudhra claims that because no certificates were issued and their servers weren't breached, there was no customer impact. That completely misses how PKI works. Anyone who recovers an intermediate CA's private key can sign fraudulent certificates without accessing the CA's servers. The signatures are generated offline. Whether a client accepts them depends on its trust store and revocation policies, not whether eMudhra's network was breached. Two of the eight compromised intermediates were for Code Signing, not TLS. Code signing has no universal Certificate Transparency requirement like browser TLS. Someone holding those recovered private keys could sign unauthorized software that appears to come from a trusted signing authority, without the signature ever showing up in public CT logs. The absence of an issuance record on crt.sh doesn't eliminate that risk. All eight intermediates were cross-signed by Sectigo under its AAA Certificate Services root in May 2025. Chrome and Mozilla had already phased that root out, but it remained active in Microsoft and Apple root programs at the time. That opened additional trust paths across major operating systems, meaning the trust implications were never confined to one browser or platform. eMudhra framed the blast radius as "one customer ecosystem in the US." Separately, its engineers estimated on Mozilla Bugzilla (#2083449) that roughly 30,000 certificates required emergency migration after root programs distrusted their parent ECC root, ~97% coming through ACME. That is a massive operational disruption. Go also had to ship CVE-2026-111943 specifically to hardcode a denylist into crypto/x509. Invoking "FIPS 140-2 Level 3 HSMs" explains nothing. eMudhra admitted that a flawed "key wrap/unwrap step" in their ceremony generated the weak keys. HSM certification only guarantees physical boundary security. It cannot stop broken scripts or flawed workflows from handling and publishing invalid key objects. When your CA private scalar is literally 4, the ceremony controls failed. eMudhra also notes that this went undetected through two independent audit cycles. Yet 16 months ago (Mozilla Bug 1970728), six of these exact intermediates were caught publishing CRLs with invalid signatures because the wrong CA key configuration was used. Sectigo sent an alert, and eMudhra’s internal spam filter quarantined the warning. The red flags were already waving in June 2025. Four questions eMudhra must answer on Bugzilla with technical facts, not corporate assurances: * What precisely went wrong in the key wrap/unwrap step that generated private scalars below 256? * Why did ceremony verification controls fail to catch these keys before certificates were published? * Why were intermediates designated for non-production use submitted to Sectigo for cross-signing? * Have all other keys generated through this ceremony workflow been independently revalidated across your eSign and enterprise PKI pipelines? Cut the deflection, drop the corporate gaslighting, and own your shit in public.
Global TLS Intermediate CA incident: We’ve updated our incident page with how it happened, who is affected (one US customer ecosystem), what’s not affected, and what we’re putting in place. We will publish the root cause once our investigation is complete. 👉emudhra.com/en/post/certific…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
eMudhra minimizes the scope by claiming only "one US customer ecosystem" is affected. In reality, 8 of its CA certificates had catastrophically weak private keys (one being simply the number 4), allowing anyone to forge trusted HTTPS certificates for any website on the internet.blog.google/security/prote…

This Orwell quote, and the other often paraphrased as "all art is political," is one of the most abused sentences in the English language. Orwell means it in the relatively narrow sense that all works of art will contain the political presuppositions of the artist. Art does not have to be actively or consciously political, but its assumptions - say, about what is right and what is wrong - count as political attitudes. This is true of everything from War & Peace to Treasure Island. But most of those who parrot the line today use it to excuse active politicking — the very propaganda Orwell warns against. If all art is political then it is fine that my work is about my politics, and you are a fool if you reject my politics, because all art is political. In The Frontiers of Art and Propaganda, Orwell takes aim at precisely this sort of sloppy, motivated reasoning: "If we look back at the English literature of the last ten years not so much at the literature as at the prevailing literary attitude, the thing that strikes us is that it has almost ceased to be aesthetic. Literature has been swamped by propaganda. I do not mean that all the books written during that period have been bad. But the characteristic writers of the time... have been didactic, political writers, aesthetically conscious, of course, but more interested in subject-matter than in technique. And the most lively criticism has nearly all of it been the work of Marxist writers... who look on every book virtually as a political pamphlet and are far more interested in digging out its political and social implications than in its literary qualities in the narrow sense." Orwell thought the first position - an awareness of art's political assumptions - was good and valuable, because it reminds us that art is of our world, and this understanding helps us spot propaganda when it disguises itself as pure aestheticism. But he deplored the second position - the conscious politicisation of art, and the view that art must be actively political to be good - "...because it caused countless young writers to try to tie their minds to a political discipline which, if they had stuck to it, would have made mental honesty impossible. The only system of thought open to them at that time was official Marxism...". Honesty is impossible in such circumstances, he said, because making art the slave of contemporary politics makes it dependent, in the end, on grubby temporal scheming. The bold Marxist writers who devoted their art to that vision of utopia were totally undone by the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. Art cannot pretend at utopian principles while it sources its morality from the real business of politics. When political art comes into conflict with the needs of ideology, the art, not the ideology, gets sacrificed. "Just as many writers about 1930 had discovered that you cannot really be detached from contemporary events, so many writers about 1939 were discovering that you cannot really sacrifice your intellectual integrity for the sake of a political creed — or at least you cannot do so and remain a writer."

“The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude.” - George Orwell “All good art is political! There is none that isn’t. And the ones that try hard not to be political are political by saying, ‘We love the status quo.’ We’ve just dirtied the word ‘politics,’ made it sound like it’s unpatriotic or something… My point is that it has to be both: beautiful and political at the same time. I’m not interested in art that is not in the world.” -Toni Morrison “All art is political. In tense, fractious times—like our current moment—all art is political. But even during those times when politics and the future of our country itself are not the source of constant worry and anxiety, art is still political. Art lives in the world, and we exist in the world, and we cannot create honest work about the world in which we live without reflecting it.”- Lin Manuel Miranda
