On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake tore a 150-meter crater into Japan's Joban Expressway. In most countries, rebuilding a collapsed four-lane highway after the fourth-largest earthquake in modern history would take two years of committee hearings and contractor disputes. In Ibaraki Prefecture, Japanese road crews did something that still makes Western civil engineers rub their eyes in disbelief. Within hours of the main tremor, NEXCO East engineers arrived while deadly aftershocks were still shaking the ground. They did not wait for bureaucracy because this highway was the primary lifeline for emergency ambulances, food trucks, and rescue units heading north into Tohoku. Working twenty-four hours a day in rotating shifts, crews excavated the shattered embankment, compacted thousands of tons of crushed stone reinforcement in layered stages, and poured fresh asphalt. Just six days later, on March 17, the gaping chasm was gone. Emergency vehicles were rolling smoothly across crisp white lane lines, and full passenger traffic reopened on March 21. When a society treats public infrastructure as a sacred promise to its citizens rather than a slow-motion profit center, miracles happen on a Tuesday.

The whole idea of zero emissions has to be scrapped and is complete lunacy to even consider. Scrap all the ideas of zero emissions @UKLabour and scrap all ideas of banning Petrol and Diesel or watch so so many vote away from your party come election time. We need choice not dictatorial policies. Some tasks can NOT be done by electric and are unlikely to be in the near future
"A consultation to β€œshape [the] pathway to reach zero emission driving by 2035” was opened in August and closes this week. β€œThe UK is reviewing targets to ensure they remain pro-business & grounded in the real world,” claimed the press release. If only." climateskeptic.org/p/the-eus…

I bet Oxford Street will turn into migrant encampment galore. Homelessness has been decriminalised and London is a β€œsanctuary” city. You can pitch a tent anywhere now, including central London.

This was entirely predictable. Cyclists aren't going to want to waste time and energy diverting down the side streets with all the obstacles and traffic lights. As usual the impact of new travel restrictions hasn't been properly thought through.
Cyclists are continuing to ride along the newly pedestrianised section of Oxford Street, despite being asked to dismount. Around seven security staff have been stationed near Oxford Circus, calling out to cyclists to get off their bikes, with mixed success. So, roughly the same number of people, just without the cars so a few can prance about in the road? πŸ˜‚ Meanwhile, the surrounding roads are getting clogged up with traffic, as reported on the traffic updates. Some transformation. 🀑

Amsterdam, where cyclists take priority from pedestrians on zebra crossings. We’re told it works in the Netherlands, but this is what we found earlier in the year.

You couldn’t make it up. The Eynsham Park & Ride continues to sit unused, costing Β£10,000 every month in security, maintenance and lighting. Now contractors have asked asked Oxfordshire County Council for an additional Β£14 MILLION for the A40 improvements, despite work on the main scheme not even getting underway! Meanwhile, further phases of the project have been paused, leaving serious questions about what will actually be delivered.

It's suspected that many of the policies said to "help pedestrians" are primarily implemented in order to further persecute motorists by narrowing roads, restricting access and removing parking spaces. cambridge-news.co.uk/news/ne…

⚠️ This 508t vehicle is entering Cheshire after passing through Talke/Newcastle. Police are holding traffic as it approaches Congleton on the A34. The 5.8m wide load is travelling from Stafford to Ellesmere Port over the weekend. It is being escorted by police and is moving slowly. Expect delays. The 96m long vehicle has come from GE Vernova's factory in Stafford, transporting a Supergrid Transformer within a girder frame trailer. It has mant axles to evenly distribute the weight. Today's route (Staffs): β€’ Ranshaw Dr to Riverway by Hough Retail Park β€’ A34 via Lichfield Rd & Queensway passed Stafford centre β€’ A518 via Lammascote Rd, Weston Rd & Beaconside β€’ A34 north via Stone Rd β€’ A34 contraflow passed Stone β€’ Back onto A34 north at Darlaston β€’ Continues on A34 via Trentham & Hanford β€’ A527 & A52 contraflow around Newcastle-under-Lyme centre (via 'Fountains Roundabout') β€’ Back onto A34 via Lower Street & Liverpool Rd β€’ A34 from Newcastle Rd onto Congleton Rd at Talke (via 'Box Crossroads') β€’ A34 into Padgbury Ln & Box Ln in Congleton, Cheshire β€’ It will stop for the night in the A54 area Will post tomorrow's route later. The above info is based on previous moves by Collett from Stafford to Ellesmere Port. The order typically covers Saturday, Sunday & Monday. The gross vehicle weight is 508 tonnes. It is 96 metres long and 5.8 metres wide. Due to these oversized dimensions it must take a complex route that includes occupying the opposite side of the carriageway.
