Bong tends to be seen as a maverick genre practitioner in the west, (and that’s not untrue) but his formalism is in dialogue with theoretical outputs from Korean Proletarian Artists' Federation. He’s one of the few left in Korean cinema engaging with its history to that extent.

I have yet to post my new review of Ken Russell’s THE DEVILS after seeing it in theaters this month, but every day i am nagged by remembering that my first review of it is stupid and my most popular Letterboxd post. So, an addendum

[VICTOR/VICTORIA] Why are homoesexual spokesmen celebrating the film? Maybe for the same reason that the young American leftist press celebrated REDS. They're hungry to see fantasy versions of themselves on the screen, and, forced to, they'll accept crumbs. (1982)

Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love begins its theatrical run this week. Here’s my review explicating what makes the film “novelistic” and why this is Lee’s most successful attempt yet to translate his literary sensibility into his cinema: reverseshot.org/reviews/entr…

Possible Love

Through its sweeping scope, Possible Love trades the granular analysis of the particulars for a lucid picture of history as a repetitive structure that governs life under capitalism.
