Thank you for sharing. We never looked into the isolated Rydberg radicals (though it would be fascinating of course). Our calculations were limited to where density originates and lands during a potential charge-transfer event between the thiolate and hydrazinium fragments.

Neutral tetravalent nitrogen? Thank you for this wonderfully educational violation of the octet rule, just in time for tomorrow’s class! It will give my students an excellent reason to think about what those lines between atoms actually mean.
P.S. Congratulations on a nice paper!

2000 K, γ-rays, UV-Mercury. That is what it took to access H•, the smallest radical in the universe. We used light, at r.t. First paper from @TheKumarLab1
Many thanks to Nils, Alberto and Peter @peterseeberger

@IAlabugin Thank you. The 'neutral tetravalent nitrogen' is NH₄•, a Rydberg radical, an unusual but real species. Historically, its existence was theoretically proposed by Berzelius as far back as 1811, long before Herzberg spectroscopically confirmed it in 1981.

Fair point. The distinction here is mechanistic: those are polar/pericyclic pathways. Our work is about generating and harnessing H• as a genuine radical, evidenced by EPR, radical clocks, and deuterium labelling. The paper addresses this directly, worth a read.

Now out in @J_A_C_S, we disclose a Pd-catalysed enantioselective arylation of aminomethyl-cyclopropanes and cyclobutanes, with the tertiary alkylamine motif playing a key role. Great work Jesus, Luke and Javi!
