Just been talking to my mate from Zimbabwe about the John Lewis Christmas advert. He wants it remade where the kids visit African grandma to show the can of whoop-ass that would be opened on ungrateful kids 😂😂😂😂😂

Shameful, received from Octopus Energy. Scaremongery. I elect to pay my bill each month for the electricity I use, rather than be overcharged on a direct debit set at an unrealistic rate. I always pay my bill on time. I will be moving providers. @OctopusEnergy @ofgem

Hi @RoyalMail Waited in all day for a parcel that was sent 24hr delivery. Just received a text informing me that delivery was attempted but address was inaccessible. Where and to whom do I complain about this downright lie? No attempt was made and my address is not inaccessible.

If you cancel your TV licence you can put the money towards your next gas bill and stick the heating on for a bit.

So, @easyJet cancelled my flight back from Glasgow in September and gave me no alternative way of getting home. I managed to get a £150 train and now they refuse to compensate me. I'm about to book my 2 x 2027 family holidays and will be using any airline but easyJet.

Given the notion of political impartiality written into the Civil Service Code, the idea that civil servants contributed to BBC journalism which scrutinised parties is eyebrow-raising, to say the least. In the time since Davie's pronouncement that BBC Verify would go global, The Spectator's Reality Check has debunked myths about the Chancellor, our energy system, net zero, dodgy academics and migration numbers to name a few. All without government minders. Only after the Telegraph revealed this did the BBC suspend the scheme. Will BBC Verify continue to limp on after yet another miscalculation? ✍️ Sam McPhail Article | spectator.com/article/could-…

"Papers Please" to get online? We say NO! @andyburnham @UKLabour Social media platforms already know an extraordinary amount about their users They can already use AI to infer whether someone is a child or teenager to a high degree of accuracy Before putting millions of adults through an ID checkpoint to access social media, the Government and the platforms should have to explain why the information they already have isn't enough - and how requiring every single user to prove their age using government-issued ID can possibly be: - Necessary - Proportionate - Or indeed safe in itself - given databases are compromised ALL THE TIME #dontidtheinternet

Lisa Nandy is a witch. The BBC wants to extend its license fee to millions of Netflix, YouTube and Amazon viewers. They lost 539,000 licence payers last year and this is their solution? Viewers who only use streaming services currently pay nothing, but now Nandy wants to force us to fund a broadcaster we don’t watch! How outrageous!

Only the BBC could devise a funding model where the solution to people not watching your programmes is to charge them for watching somebody else's. Under this logic, every time I order a Domino's, I should send Pizza Hut £2.50 to support the future of British pizza.
🚨 NEW: The Government is planning to extend the licence fee to online platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon

Just putting @netflix @AmazonUK and @AppleTV on notice - if you plan on charging a licence fee on behalf of the BBC, I will cancel my subscription in an instant. For Amazon in particular you’ll need to unbundle your TV service from Prime because I’m not paying the BBC for free parcel delivery.

People are already paying for subscriptions to Netflix, YouTube, Sky and countless other streaming services. If the BBC is struggling to stay afloat, perhaps it’s time to scrap the archaic TV licence fee and move to a subscription-based model. Let people decide for themselves whether the BBC is worth paying for, rather than forcing everyone to fund a service they have little interest in watching. With the cost of living already sky-high, why should ordinary people be forced to shoulder yet another financial burden to prop up an institution they neither use nor wish to support? The idea of effectively making people pay more for their existing streaming and entertainment habits to fund the BBC is completely out of touch with the financial pressures households are facing. People are already struggling to afford even the simplest pleasures in life. A trip to the cinema, a meal out or a night socialising with friends can feel like a luxury these days. For many, a Netflix subscription or a bit of YouTube at home is one of the few affordable ways to unwind and escape the daily grind. Stop reaching further into people's pockets and taking away what little respite they have left. If the BBC wants to remain relevant and financially sustainable, it should have to persuade people that its content is worth paying for, just like every other subscription service. If people value it, they’ll subscribe. If they don’t, that should be their choice. The last thing people need during a cost-of-living crisis is another unpopular, forced charge. I suspect it could provoke resentment on a scale reminiscent of the poll tax. Give people choice, respect their finances and let the BBC earn its subscribers rather than forcing the public to fund it.

Activist: "The difference is nothing died for my dinner." Farmer: "What did you have?" Activist: "Rice, roast veg, hummus, a bit of bread. Oat milk in my tea." Farmer: "The rice." Activist: "Grown in a paddy." Farmer: "A flooded field, drained for harvest. Frogs, fish, snails, eels, all of it dies in the mud. Then the combine. The veg?" Activist: "Carrots, peppers, courgettes." Farmer: "Carrots are a ploughed field. I've ploughed. The gulls follow the tractor because of what comes up in pieces. Peppers and courgettes are a polytunnel. Slug pellets, and a hive of bees trucked in to pollinate them, then the hive's left to die at the end of the season because it's cheaper than feeding it. The hummus?" Activist: "Chickpeas." Farmer: "Sprayed with something to kill the plant so it dries evenly for the combine. I've done that too. Whatever's living in it dries out with it. Mice, voles, leverets, partridge chicks. Twelve miles an hour, a blade eight metres wide. The bread?" Activist: "...Wheat." Farmer: "Same field, same machine, plus the rats in the grain store and what's done about them. Your oat milk's the same again, with a factory on the end." Activist: "Those are all accidents." Farmer: "I've killed more voles with a plough than I ever have with a bolt gun, and I'm the one with the bolt gun. One bullock off that hill is one death and a year's dinners. Your plate's about forty and you didn't see any of them." Activist: "At least I didn't choose it." Farmer: "You chose to be the only one at the table who didn't know."
