On using twitter to spread science: RCT of 112 papers randomly chosen to be shared on twitter by a group of surgeons w ~58K followers (or to not be shared). Papers that were tweeted had 4x more citations a year later. NB @EndoSurgSF @jack sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

We do some exploration into which dyads exhibit the strongest effect. When two users share a hometown and that information is displayed, we see a large increase in friendship formation.

We hypothesized that displaying more *surprising* (in the *information theoretic* sense) things in common would have a stronger effect. We find weak evidence for this to be true. Here is curve of effect size by how surprising sharing the hometown in common is.

If I had to boil the paper down to one plot, this would be it. - showing more things in common (TIC) causes a higher probability of friend request and subsequent formation - effect is dramatically higher for those without mutual friends (where TIC information is less novel)
