Today, I sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding the ongoing persecution of young Cuban activist Anna Bensi and many other brave young Cubans who continue to raise their voices against the communist socialist dictatorship in Cuba. For more than 67 years, the Cuban people have endured censorship, political persecution, imprisonment, intimidation, and the denial of their most basic human rights. Today, young voices across Cuba are being targeted simply for speaking the truth and demanding freedom. The Cuban dictatorship is not only a tragedy for the Cuban people. It is also a threat to the national security of the United States. For decades, this regime has aligned itself with America’s adversaries, supported anti-democratic movements, and worked against freedom, democracy, and stability in our hemisphere. The world cannot continue treating the Cuban regime as a normal government while it persecutes peaceful activists, imprisons political opponents, and violates human rights. There can be no concessions, no normalization, and no silence in the face of a dictatorship that continues to oppress its own people. I stand with Anna Bensi, with every young Cuban, every political prisoner, every activist, and every Cuban family that dreams of a free nation. Freedom will come. Cuba will be free. Hoy, jóvenes en toda Cuba son perseguidos simplemente por decir la verdad y exigir libertad. La dictadura cubana no es solo una tragedia para el pueblo cubano.
