IATA’s 2026 survey found 52% of African passengers had been discouraged from visiting a destination by immigration rules, against 43% globally. As someone in travel, this hits home. We keep telling Africans to explore Africa, but are we making it easy enough?

UGANDA IN BERLIN The Embassy of the Republic of Uganda in Berlin has strengthened its tourism promotion efforts in Germany through a three-year football partnership with VfB Einheit zu Pankow The MOU was signed with the Berlin-based football club during an event in Pankow. Under the agreement, the @ExploreUganda - The Pearl of Africa” brand will feature on the kits of the club’s first men’s team and G2 youth team The partnership uses the popularity of football as a platform to showcase Uganda’s tourism potential, strengthen people-to-people relations, and encourage greater interest in Uganda as a destination for German travellers. It also provides an opportunity to engage young people and build lasting connections between Uganda and local communities in Berlin. I love this!

During the Rwenzori Marathon, I found myself sleeping about 40km away from Kasese because accommodation was extremely limited. Almost everywhere I went, facilities were fully booked. Beyond finding accommodation for myself, I also helped arrange and host over 56 beds across different accommodation facilities around the national park. That experience opened my eyes to the enormous tourism and business opportunities that come with the Rwenzori Marathon. Next edition, I am changing the game. I am looking at creating a much bigger experience by hosting international visitors for at least two weeks, giving them an opportunity to explore more of Uganda beyond the marathon. My ambition is to use the marathon as a gateway to attract more foreign tourists, increase tourism spending and bring more foreign currency into our economy. We must stop looking at sporting events purely as competitions. They are also powerful platforms for destination marketing, hospitality, investment and economic growth. Imagine someone flying into Uganda for the marathon but staying for two weeks, exploring our national parks, sleeping in our hotels, eating our food, hiring our vehicles and experiencing our culture. That is how we turn sporting events into meaningful tourism opportunities and economic benefits for our communities. @wekesa_amos

The Masaza Cup: A Celebration of Culture, Identity and Tourism 🇺🇬 The joy, energy and excitement surrounding the Masaza Cup are a true reflection of who we are as Ugandans. Beyond football, it represents our identity, heritage, unity and sense of belonging. People show up not just to watch a game, but because they feel connected to something deeply rooted in their culture. Imagine harnessing the power of our kingdoms, cultural institutions and traditional events to position Uganda on the global tourism stage. Events like the Masaza Cup demonstrate the enormous potential of culture and sports tourism in promoting Uganda to the world. They offer an authentic experience that combines sport, heritage, community and destination appeal. What if we took this unique Ugandan experience to the global stage? The opportunities for tourism growth, investment, cultural preservation and international visibility could be tremendous. Uganda has a story worth sharing with the world. Our culture is our identity, our sport is a powerful attraction, and our heritage is a tourism asset. Let's preserve it, celebrate it and turn it into a global destination experience. 🇺🇬
