Acclaimed US journalist Dorothy Thompson said much the same in 1937…
In 1935 Sinclair Lewis wrote the dystopian novel It Can't Happen Here, which describes how a demagogue could win the U.S. presidency and establish a fascist dictatorship by appealing to traditional American values: "... the worst Fascists were they who disowned the word 'Fascism' and preached enslavement to Capitalism under the style of Constitutional and Traditional Native American Liberty."
